Softball Rebounds to Take Three Straight in Arctic Blast

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 DECATUR, Alabama – The Belhaven softball team improved to 8-2 on the season after picking up three wins in the Arctic Blast Tournament on Friday afternoon. A day after suffering their second loss in five days, the Blazers edged Lindsey Wilson College 3-2, blanked William Woods University 3-0, and run ruled Tennessee Wesleyan College 11-3.

The Blazers began their afternoon picking up where they left off yesterday before weather forced their game with Lindsey Wilson to be postponed. Just four Blazers recorded hits in the game, but it proved to be enough as the pitching staff surrendered just three base hits to the Blue Raiders.

Jessica Paris received the starting nod for the Blazers, pitching into the third before turning things over to Belhaven's bullpen. Ginger Lonergan picked up the victory in the circle, allowing just two hits over the final 4.1 innings. Ashlee Hitt and Katy Adair each drove in a run to back the Blazer arms.

With Lonergan showing no signs of tiring, Belhaven went right back to her to pitch against William Woods. The senior didn't disappoint, hurling a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and adding four strikeouts en route to her third victory of the year.

"Ginger pitched 10 scoreless innings and totally shut the competition down," Head Coach Kevin Griffin said. "She was absolutely phenomenal."

Counterpart MacKenzie Bowden went all seven innings as well, surrendering a hit each to Josie Porter, Shelby Watson, Denee' Crawford, and Haley Yasses. Crawford, a 2013 Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, highlighted the offensive attack by driving in all the runs in the game.

After scoring a combined eight runs in their previous three games of the tournament, the Blazer bats came alive in their final game on Friday. Belhaven defeated Tennessee Wesleyan by way of the mercy rule after five innings of play.

Porter paced the Blazers from the leadoff spot, contributing three hits and driving in four runs. Emily Tucker added a hit and three RBI of her own, while Crawford, Yasses, and Emily Todd each drove in a run. Todd, Carly Yasses, and Dominique Corona each posted a multi-hit game, giving the pitching staff all the run support they would need.

"When we hit 1-9 in our lineup, we are tough to beat," Griffin said. "Today was one of those days where we hit great against very good teams."

Belhaven turned to Paris once again in the circle, and the senior pitched four innings, allowing three runs on six hits while walking five and fanning five on her way to her third victory of 2014. Lonergan pitched a scoreless fifth inning to end Belhaven's evening with three consecutive victories.

The Blazers have now emerged victorious in four of their last five games and will look to ride the momentum from Friday into the final day of the tournament. Belhaven returns to action on Saturday morning, taking the Field against Point University at 10 am before concluding Arctic Blast play against Freed-Hardeman University at noon.
