Blazers Win Streak Snapped With Mobile Loss

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball team (13-14, 7-10 SSAC) saw their five game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night after suffering a 76-72 loss to the University of Mobile. The 25th-ranked Rams improved to 18-7 overall, including a 12-5 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

"We missed too many easy baskets, had crucial turnovers, and didn't rebound well," Head Coach Rusty Cram said. "We made too many mistakes against a team we couldn't afford to have them against."

Ariel Wilson led all scorers with 29 points, while Erika LeFlore followed with 25 of her own. Deonica McCormick led Mobile with 24, while three other Lady Rams scored in double figures, as well.

LeFlore posted a double-double by leading the Blazers with 12 rebounds, while Mobile's Kyera Rowe and Jakela Johnson pulled down 12 and 11 respectively.

The Rams took the team advantage on the glass, out-rebounding their hosts 43-34. Belhaven connected on nine three pointers, shooting 39% from that department and 43% from the field.

The visitors shot just 4-13 from behind the arc and 67% on the floor. Belhaven converted at 78% clip from the charity stripe, while Mobile countered with a 67% effort.

Belhaven returns to action on Saturday, when they will travel to Hattiesburg to take on SSAC rival William Carey University. The Blazers took the previous matchup in a 63-60 battle to open the month of February.

Tipoff with the Crusaders is slated for 2:00 PM and it will be a big contest for both teams. The Crusaders still have an outside shot at a playoff berth and Belhaven remains in a tie for the fifth and final playoff spot in the SSAC West Division with Blue Mountain College. The Blazers got some help from Bethel Thursday night, who got past the Toppers 74-61.

"If we win that game, we can eliminate them (William Carey) from making the conference tournament," Cram said. "It's a must win game for us, and we know it will be a war."
