Blazers Slide Past Toppers

Box Score BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – After edging Blue Mountain College 61-60 on Saturday, the Belhaven women's basketball team (13-13, 7-9 SSAC) picked up their fifth straight Southern States Athletic Conference victory. With the loss, the Toppers dropped their third straight and fell to 10-12 overall and 7-9 in league play.

Belhaven's offensive attack was led by Ariel Wilson's 18 points, while Tashayla Steede and Erika LeFlore followed with 11 and ten respectively. Steede finished her night one rebound shy of a double-double, and her nine were good enough for a game high.

Anna Brooke Page led all scorers with 27 points, including 18 from the field and a 5-6 effort at the charity stripe. Kyesha Clark added 10 points, while Page served as the team's leader on the boards.

As a team, the Blazers outrebounded their hosts 33-27, but the Lady Toppers connected on 42% from beyond the arc to best Belhaven's 28% in that department.

The Blazers saw their biggest lead come with 12 minutes remaining in the game, when Wilson hit a jumper to give her team a 46-34 lead. Over the next nine and a half minutes, Blue Mountain went on a 24-12 run, but the Blazers never relinquished a lead.

However, the lead was in jeopardy all the way to the end when Chelsea Hussey missed what would have been a go ahead basket for Blue Mountain in the final seconds. Kenya Wright grabbed the rebound for the Blazers and ran out the clock to secure a crucial conference victory.

The win put Belhaven right back into the thick of the SSAC playoff race. The Blazers find themselves tied for fifth place in the SSAC West Division standings with Blue Mountain. Belhaven has four games remaining on the schedule and will try to hold off the Toppers and William Carey for the fifth and final spot in the conference tournament.

Belhaven will put their win streak on the line once again on Thursday, when they will host the University of Mobile in SSAC play. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 PM from Rugg Arena.
