The first game of the tournament saw the Blazers defeat Texas Wesleyan by a final tally of 8-2 behind the right arm of
Katy Adair. The Texas native felt right at home, lasting all seven innings and allowing two runs on just three hits while striking out eight and walking three.
The Blazers chased Morgan Johnson before the fifth inning was over, handing the Lady Ram starter her first loss of the season. Johnson allowed six runs on seven hits through 4.2, and Adair picked up her first win of 2014.
Belhaven's offensive attack was led by 2013 All-American
Denee' Crawford, who drove in a pair of runs.
Josie Porter added three hits, while
Shelby Watson chimed in a two hit effort at the plate. Eight Blazers recorded hits, while five drove in a run.
Senior
Jessica Paris took the mound for Belhaven in the team's second game on Friday, hurling a complete game one-hitter to record her first victory of the campaign. Paris showed complete dominance in her first start, recording 12 strikeouts while walking just one. Watson, Adair, and
Ashlee Hitt each recorded three hits, while Watson and Hitt added two RBI apiece.
"I was excited to see our lineup hit the ball well against good pitching," Head Coach
Kevin Griffin said. "Josie, Shelby, and Ashlee were phenomenal and really set the table for us."
Friday's finale saw the Blazers lead 8-0 in the third inning over Our Lady of the Lake University. The Lady Saints would cut into the deficit, but Belhaven ultimately held on for a 12-6 win. Krista Arocha got hit with the loss after the Blazers got to her for eight runs and 10 hits through five innings.
Paris received the start once again and pitched into the sixth before turning things over to Watson in the circle to finish the game. Paris recorded her second victory in as many Blazer ballgames, allowing six runs on seven hits. Watson hurled the final 1.2 innings and only allowed one hit, while the offense again backed their pitchers in a big way.
"Our pitchers were outstanding, and she was the highlight," Griffin said. "She really stepped up in the second game."
Nine different Blazers drove in runs, sparked largely by sophomore
Haley Yasses. The first baseman went 3 for 3 at the plate while plating three more. Additionally, Watson, Crawford, Hitt, and
Stacey Luciani each posted a multi-hit game, helping Belhaven cruise to their fourth straight victory to open the season.
The Blazers have yet to trail in 2014 but will be faced with a big task on Saturday in the form of third-ranked Oklahoma City University. The first pitch is slated for 9:00 AM. Belhaven will play their final game of the Classic at 11:00 AM against the University of Saint Mary (Kan).
