JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Men's Basketball team came up short in a comeback effort Friday night, falling to Brewton-Parker College 85-83 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
The Blazers (2-9, 0-2 SSAC) came out of the half time break trailing the Barons (7-3, 2-0 SSAC) by 14 points, and after a few baskets by both teams, Belhaven cut a 15-point deficit down with a 20-5 run through the middle of the second half.
However, the Barons were able to regain the lead on four different occasions after the Blazers would cut the deficit to a tie. On the last pair of lead changes, the Blazers took a 1-point lead with a
Datodrick Pinkston lay up. But, Brewton-Parker answered with a dunk and Belhaven was never able to tie or retake the lead.
Belhaven had a chance late in the game after Brewton-Parker turned the ball over with 3.0 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, De'La Mayers was fouled on a shot attempt with 0.1 seconds remaining. However, Mayers missed the first shot of the two free throws and after intentionally missing the second free throw, Belhaven was unable to tip the rebound back.
Jordan Bedford led all players in the game with 27 points
and seven assists. Bedford also collected eight rebounds and three steals.
Mayers collected another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Mayers also matched a season high four blocks in the game, leading the Blazers, who finished with seven total blocks on the night.
Dycus Juste and
Josh Carpenter also finished in double digits with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Belhaven finished the night with 43.5 percent shooting, but was just 29 percent from beyond the arch and 53 percent (16-30) from the free-throw line. The Barons were 47 percent from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc. The Barons finished 24-30 from the free-throw line.
The Blazers had 17 second chance points in the game, six more than the Barons, but BPC finished with 12 fast break points to Belhaven's six. The big difference in the game came from the bench. The Barons finished with 42 bench points while the Green and Gold's bench contributed just 13 points.
Belhaven opened up the game on a 7-0 run, but the Barons worked the game back to a 13-13 tie before taking the lead for the remainder of the first half.
The Blazers will return to action Saturday with a 5 p.m. tip against Middle Georgia State College.
