TYLER, Texas – The Belhaven men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Texas College by a final of 87-84. The victory came on a buzzer-beating three pointer by senior guard
Jerrial Dawson after a well-executed ball screen that left Dawson with an uncontested shot.
Belhaven's
Jordan Bedford led all scorers with 24 points after connecting on eight of 15 shots from the field. Dawson and
Will Sheriff each added 16, while
Josh Carpenter contributed another 11 of his own.
Dexter Cormier highlighted the offensive effort for the Steers, pouring in 18 points that included seven from the free throw line. Dahir Haji, Sebastian Opon, and Roy Shelton added 14, 12, and 11 points respectively to give each team four players in double figures.
The Blazers finished the night tied at 38 in rebounds with the Steers, but the Green and Gold forced two more turnovers. Belhaven shot 56% from the floor, including an 8-for-18 effort from behind the arc, while their hosts countered with a 46% effort overall and made just six of their 19 threes.
Belhaven returns to action on Thursday, when they will travel to Louisiana to take on 3rd-ranked LSU-Shreveport at 7:00 pm. The Pilots claimed the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season with a slim 91-87 victory at Rugg Arena.
