CLINTON, Miss. – The Belhaven softball team dropped into the loser's bracket of the 2013 NAIA National Championship Opening Round, falling to top-seed and eighth ranked Reinhardt University (GA) Tuesday afternoon at the Clinton High School Sportsplex. The Blazers will play again Tuesday night in an elimination game against the winner of William Woods and LSU-Alexandria.
Reinhardt (42-6), after scoring only one run on one hit in the opening game on Monday against LSU-Alexandria, exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first and in the process put the Blazers on their heels for the rest of the day. The Lady Eagles pounded out six hits including a two run double by shortstop Lindsey Booker. Catcher Kaley Garmon added a two RBI single and first baseman Kelsey Floyd chalked up an RBI on a ground out to third base.
The Lady Eagles added their sixth run on a wild pitch and then ended the game with two more runs in the fifth. Booker had the game winning hit with a single to center field, plating second baseman Tyler Sampson.
Meanwhile, Belhaven (36-13) was unable to get anything going at the plate against pitcher Maddie Monroe who won for the 26th time this season. The Blazers were limited to four hits and had only two runners reach second base.
Monroe improved to 26-1 on the season and notched her 25th complete game of the season and second shutout of the opening round. Monroe did not walk a batter while striking out three. Booker led Reinhardt at the plate going 3 for 3 with three runs batted in. Garmon chipped in with two hits and two RBI followed by left fielder Alexis Chumbler with two hits and two runs scored.
Ginger Lonergan logged a third of an inning and took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits. The setback leaves Lonergan with a 7-4 mark on the 2013 season. Belhaven left fielder Dominique led the way with two hits including a double.
Reinhardt will now advance to Wednesday's championship game at 1:00 PM and will await one of the other three remaining teams in the Belhaven bracket.
