Blazers Punch ticket to NAIA Opening Round Final

Box Score
CLINTON, Miss. – The finals are now set in the Belhaven Bracket of the 2013 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening round as host Belhaven defeated LSU-Alexandria 6-2 to emerge from the loser's bracket. The second seed Blazers lost earlier in the day to top seed Reinhardt University 8-0, but Tuesday's night's win sets up a rematch with the Lady Eagles in the finals.

Belhaven (37-13) had been struggling to find a rhythm at the plate this week, but came to life in the top of the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. First baseman Haley Yasses started the rally with a one out single down the right field line followed by a walk to center fielder Lizzy Hess. Second baseman Jordan Cole then delivered the hit of the tournament so far for the Blazers, a three run home run over the left center field wall off pitcher Logan Hebert to make it 3-0. It was the first round tripper hit by any player so far this week.

Belhaven kept the momentum going in the top of the fifth scoring two more times to extend the lead to 5-0. Left fielder Dominique Corona opened the inning with a double to left center and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk to pinch hitter Taylor Bryan. Cole then picked up her fourth RBI of the night with a ground out to first base that chased home DP Jessica Paris after she reached on a walk earlier in the frame.

LSU-Alexandria (23-30) would not go quietly using the long ball in the bottom of the sixth to pull within three runs. Third baseman Jaci Trahn smashed a leadoff single to center and then catcher Raquel Granados launched a two run homer to left field making it a 5-2 game.

With two outs in the inning, the Generals brought the tying run to the plate with a pair of back to back walks against relief pitcher Shelby Watson. Katy Adair, who started the game and got into a bind at the beginning of the sixth, reentered the circle and induced a ground out off the bat of pinch hitter Kelsey Jagneaux to free the Blazers from a jam.

Belhaven tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Cole reached on an RBI fielder's choice. An error by center fielder Mallory Hall gave the Blazers an extra out to work with enabling third baseman Brittni Trawick to score in the inning. Adair, after the brief rest in the sixth, closed out the game with a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the 6-2 win.

Adair improved to 14-6 on the season and notched her second win of the tournament after defeating William Woods 2-0 on Monday. Adair logged 6.1 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Shortstop Courtney Fairley led the Blazers with three hits followed by Denee' Crawford with two. Fairley has been one of the hottest hitters in the tournament so far, collecting six to lead all players. Cole ended the night with one hit, but drove in five of Belhaven's six runs.

Logan Hebert was on the losing side of the scorebook for LSU-Alexandria as she ends the 2013 season with a record of 17-20. Hebert tossed six innings and gave up four runs on eight hits with four walks. Amanda Harmon permitted the other two Blazer runs on Tuesday night. Granados was 1 for 3 for the Generals and picked up two RBI on the home run.

The Blazers still find themselves in a must win situation needing to defeat Reinhardt twice on Wednesday to advance to Columbus, Ga. The championship final is set for 1:00 PM at the Clinton High School Sportsplex with the if necessary game to follow if Belhaven prevails in game one.
