GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Belhaven softball team kept their hot start to the 2013 season going by winning two of their three games in the Gulf Shore Invitational on Friday. Belhaven kicked off the morning with wins over Georgia Gwinnett and University of Houston-Victoria before falling to No. 15 Lindsey Wilson in the final game.
Katy Adair got the start in game one versus the Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett and pitched her second straight shutout in a 4-0 win. She struck out nine batters while only giving up two hits in a dominant performance that Blazer fans have become accustomed to during her first season.
The Blazers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first when
Jordan Cole led off the inning by being hit by a pitch before getting driven in on a single by
Denee' Crawford.
After a quiet second inning Belhaven got back on the board in the top of the third.
Shelby Watson started the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw back to the infield. With a runner in scoring position, Cole double into the gap in left field, which easily scored Watson from second base.
After
Lizzy Hess pushed Cole over to third base on a ground ball, Adair poked a single to the right side of the infield to score Cole. The Grizzlies would escape the inning without any further damage, but Belhaven held a firm 3-0 advantage.
Watson was involved in the final run for the Blazers in the fourth inning. She reached on a walk, stole a base and then eventually scored on a passed ball.
In the second game of the day, Belhaven was matched up with a preseason NAIA Top 10 team in Houston-Victoria. The Jaguars finished the 2012 season at 40-10, but were unable to find any consistency against Blazers' pitcher
Jessica Paris.
Paris continued to be an innings-eater for the Blazers by once again going the distance in a seven-inning victory. The junior was not to be outdone by Adair's performance from earlier in the day, as she struck out eight batters and only surrendered four hits in the shutout.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Belhaven came to bat once again. The Blazers had collected a few hits against Jaguars' starter Tanya Carlson, but could not find the timely hitting to put up a run in the first four innings.
Cole doubled with one out and Hess was a recipient of a base on balls before Crawford unluckily hit into a fielder's choice play at third base. After Adair reached on an error by the right fielder, a play that Hess scored on from second base,
Courtney Fairley singled in Crawford on the next play to give Belhaven a 2-0 lead.
Paris eliminated a threat in the bottom of the sixth before the Blazers tacked on three more runs on a Crawford homerun in the seventh inning, completing the 5-0 victory over the Jaguars. Paris improved to 3-0 on the year with a 0.33 earned run average.
The Blazers were barely ousted in their final game of the day against the No. 15 Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. The game was a battled of two undefeated teams with the Blazers entering at 7-0 and the Blue Raiders with a 12-0 record.
Adair got her second start of the day and only allowed one run in six innings of work. Unfortunately, an RBI double by Madison Scott in the third inning would be the only run that the Raiders would need to pull out a slim victory.
With the loss, Adair fell to 4-1 on the year.
Belhaven will wrap up a busy two day tournament with games against No. 18 Central Methodist University (Mo.) at 1 p.m. and Campbellsville (Ky.) at 3 p.m. The game versus Campbellsville is a rematch of a game that Belhaven won two weeks ago in Decatur, Alabama at the Shorter Invite.
