Game 1 Game 2
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven softball team rattled off a doubleheader sweep of NCAA Division I Alcorn State in their home openers on Wednesday afternoon.
Katy Adair and
Jessica Paris both pitched complete games to give the Blazers two wins.
If the new-look Blazers had any nerves playing in front of the home crowd for the first time in 2013, they certainly did not show. Belhaven jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game one of the doubleheader and never looked back in a five inning contest.
After
Jordan Cole was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first,
Denee' Crawford brought her home with a long homerun over the left-centerfield fence to give the Blazers a 2-0 advantage. Crawford's homer was the first by a Belhaven player this season and gave her a team leading six runs-batted-in.
Belhaven would tack on two more runs in the bottom half of the first for the four run lead.
Adair looked dominant on the mound and only allowed a handful of runners past first base. The Lady Braves (1-14) never threatened the Blazers (5-0) lead, while Belhaven continued to add runs to their ever blossoming point difference.
Belhaven took a 7-0 lead into the bottom half of the fifth when Adair helped close the door on the Braves' chances with a walk-off two-run homer to left and completeing a 9-0 victory. The game ended after the at-bat due to NAIA rules stating that a game will end after the fifth if a team has an eight-run advantage. Outfielder
Shelby Watson also powered a ball out of the park in an impressive hitting display for Belhaven.
Paris got the start in game two and continued the streak of impressive pitching performances the Blazers have had to begin the year. She got into a bit of trouble in the top of the first inning, giving up three hits and a run.
However, the junior only gave up two hits the rest of the way and allowed the Blazers' offense to find what worked in game one.
Alcorn's starting pitched Deanna Rancilio allowed the Blazers to tie the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI grounder by Crawford that scored Cole. Rancilio matched Paris pitch for pitch down the stretch until the bottom of the sixth inning.
Belhaven's two pitchers combined on the offensive side to give the Blazers their first lead in game two in the bottom of the sixth. Adair walked with one out and two batters later Paris knocked her in with a double off the centerfield wall.
Paris then struck out the side in the top of seventh inning for a complete game 2-1 win and improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Blazers will take their undefeated record to the Gulf Coast Invitational this weekend. Belhaven takes on Georgia Gwinnett at 9 a.m. on Friday morning to kick off the tournament. The Grizzlies enter the game at 3-9.
