HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Belhaven softball team concluded a perfect weekend with two wins at the William Carey Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Belhaven defeated LSU-Alexandria 5-3 in the first game before topping Embry-Riddle (Fla.) 2-0 in the final contest of the tournament.
First up for the Blazers was a battle-tested LSU-Alexandria team that sported a much better squad than their record indicated coming in. The Lady Generals have had an early season schedule that included games against eight NCAA Division I opponents and top 10 NAIA schools like Auburn-Montgomery, Central Baptist and Brenau.
The Lady Generals had their fair share of resume-building victories, but Belhaven came in as one of the hottest teams in the NAIA.
Belhaven got on the board first, which has been a recipe for success for them in route to a 12-2 record to begin the 2013 season.
Denee' Crawford walked with two outs in the bottom of the first and she was escorted to third on a double to left field by starting pitcher
Katy Adair.
Dominique Corona and
Courtney Fairley both walked to force in a run, an RBI was credited to Fairley on the play.
Generals' pitcher Logan Hebert got
Ashlee Hitt to popup to the third baseman to escape any further damage from the powerful Belhaven offense.
Adair pitched a no-hitter through the first three innings as Belhaven clung to the slim 1-0 lead. She walked Mallory Hall, the second batter of the game, but Hall was subsequently thrown out on a pickoff attempt to first.
The Belhaven starter struck out three batters heading into the fourth and had faced the least amount of possible batsmen.
Belhaven was unable to add any more runs to give Adair a cushion and the Generals took advantage of the opportunity in the fourth inning. The second time through the lineup was much kinder to LSU-Alexandria.
Adair struck out the first batter of the inning and forced a groundout from the second Generals' player, but a two-out rally gave LSU-Alexandria life for the first time.
Calla Willoughby singled through the middle of the infield for the first hit against Adair on the afternoon. The next batter, Jaci Trahan hit a long double to score Willoughby from first base, but Trahan was thrown out trying to extend the play to a triple. LSU-Alexandria tied the game at one, but Adair was able to get out of the inning without any further issues.
The Blazers were quick to respond as
Lizzy Hess and
Jordan Cole led off the bottom of the fourth with singles. Hess advanced to third base on the drag bunt single by Cole, but Cole was thrown out trying to steal second base during
Shelby Watson's at bat.
Watson punished a ball to left-centerfield, scoring Hess easily from third base. With one out in the inning Crawford hit a hard grounder to the shortstop to advance Watson to third. Adair then stepped to the plate and dropped a ball in front of the Generals' left fielder to score Watson.
Belhaven entered the sixth with a 3-1 lead after Adair pitched another perfect one, two, three inning in the fifth.
LSU-Alexandria would once again tie the score as Adair struggled a bit with her control, walking three batters and giving up a single to make it a 3-2 game. Trahan would make it a 3-3 game on a sacrifice fly to centerfield, but Adair would get the next batter to pop to second to end the trouble.
As they did the first time, Belhaven responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to reclaim the lead. Watson, Crawford, Adair, Corona and Fairley all reached base during the inning as the Blazers plated two more runs with a chance to win in the top of the seventh.
Adair and
Ginger Lonergan combined to shut down the Generals in the seventh inning, leaving one batter stranded and pulling out the 5-3 victory.
LSU-Alexandria became only the second team this season to score more than one run against the strong Belhaven pitching with Campbellsville being the only other school to do so. Campbellsville has the two highest offensive totals against the Blazers this season.
Jessica Paris got the nod in the second game of the tournament and mesmerized hitters all afternoon long. Paris had only allowed two earned runs in 27 1/3 innings entering the game with Embry-Riddle.
The two teams failed to get any offense going through a full slate of seven innings and forced the game into extra innings. As sharp as Paris was for Belhaven the combination of Melanie Lee and Robi Zimmerman was just as good.
The duo surrendered only five hits in eight innings of work, but Belhaven was able to finally get something going against Zimmerman in the eighth inning.
Adair singled in Crawford from third base and
Mandy Fuller hit a towering double to plate Adair for a 2-0 lead.
Paris shutdown the Eagles (6-10) in the bottom of the eighth to secure her second complete-game shutout of the season and lowered her ERA to an eye-popping 0.40 mark. The junior gave up four hits and struck out seven batters in eight innings of work.
Belhaven begins their conference slate on Tuesday with two road contests versus Spring Hill College in Mobile. The Badgers have a 20-3 record entering Tuesday's battle of two SSAC heavy weights.
