Blazers Blank Southern in 2013 Season Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Belhaven softball team kicked off the 2013 regular season with a 6-0 win at NCAA Division I Southern University Wednesday afternoon. The Blazers pounded out 13 hits and scored four times in the fifth inning to put the game away.

Belhaven (1-0) notched the first run of the game in the third inning on a clutch two out RBI single by pitcher Katy Adair to make it a 1-0 contest. The Blazers collected three hits in the inning, but Southern University (0-11) was able to escape further damage.

In the fifth, the Blazers were able to establish control of the game scoring four times on five hits. Catcher Denee' Crawford led the inning off with a singled followed by an RBI double from left fielder Dominique Corona. Shortstop Courtney Fairley and first baseman Haley Yasses followed with RBI singles and center fielder Lizzy Hess capped the inning with a bases loaded walk extending the lead to 5-0.

Belhaven scored once more in the sixth inning when Corona blasted a leadoff triple and with one out came into score on a wild pitch by Arismendi. Adair and Megan Timbs combined for the shutout in the circle and limited the Jaguars to just two hits.

Adair tossed six innings in her Belhaven debut earning the first victory of the season. Adair gave up two hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five.

Fairley led the Blazers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with one run batted in. Yasses and Corona each had two hits and one RBI followed by Crawford with two hits and a run scored. Hess and Adair rounded out the offense with one hit and one RBI apiece. Second baseman Jordan Cole reach base four times on three walks and a base hit leading to a pair of steals.

King and Jackson had the only hits of the afternoon for Southern, with the only extra base hit being a double by King. Arismendi was charged with all six runs and surrendered 11 hits in the circle.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday in the Shorter University Invitational against Campbellsville University (KY) and Milligan College (TN). The Blazers will battle Thomas University (GA) and Freed-Hardeman University (TN) on Saturday to close the two day event. The first pitch on Friday against Campbellsville is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
