Blazers Push Win Streak to Three

JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven men's tennis team continued their hot start to the 2013 season by defeating NCAA Division I team Jackson State University. Belhaven dropped only one match on the day and moved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-1 victory.

Belhaven breezed through their first two matches of the year, but faced a much stiffer test on Saturday afternoon against the Jackson State Tigers. The Tigers, a member of the SWAC in D-I athletics, were coming off a two match winning streak of their own.

The Blazers were tested for the first time in doubles this season, with the Tigers first doubles team matching up well with Belhaven in the early going. A combination of Nikita Lisov and David Mejia was able to pull out the 8-5 victory against Jose Luque and Carlos Martinez.

Belhaven's second doubles team, Jefferson Nino and Daniel Duarte, easily handled Camilo Patino and Herman Geria 8-1 to give the Blazers their first point. The third doubles team also came out victorious with an 8-4 win. The tough match at first doubles capped off a 3-0 sweep to start for the Blazers.

Jackson State got their first point on the board when Martinez defeated Mejia at third singles 6-1, 6-4. Daniel Prado, who usually plays at the third spot did not participate in singles after his doubles victory, which moved Mejia up a spot.

Belhaven swept the Tigers the rest of the way down the lineup to come out with an 8-1 victory.
