Bulldogs Earn Season Split with Blazers

Box Score TOUGALOO, Miss – The Belhaven women's basketball team fell to 5-5 on Tuesday night after suffering a 64-38 loss at the hands of non-conference foe Tougaloo College. The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 while salvaging a season split with their crosstown rival.

"After the first three or four minutes, we were totally out of it," Head Coach Rusty Cram said. "We are playing with lack of confidence and leadership, and it's hurt our performance as a ballclub."

Erika LeFlore and Jessica Triplett led the team with eight points apiece, while LeFlore and Tashayla Steede each grabbed eight rebounds. Tougaloo countered with Portia Craft, who led all scorers with 17 points. Chasity Kearney added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Freshman Ariel Wilson entered the game as Belhaven's leading scorer, but was forced to sit out after suffering an injury in last week's exhibition against Delta State.

"We don't have any individual that can replace 18 points per game, so we have to try to do that by committee," Cram said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to make up the point gap tonight."

The Blazers went two of six from behind the three-point line, while Tougaloo shot three for nine. The Bulldogs 38 percent from the field bested the Blazers 24 percent, though the visitors out-rebounded their hosts 44-39.

Belhaven returns to action on Saturday with a road trip against non-conference opponent Pensacola Christian College. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 PM.

"We'll look to get back to work in the morning, and look forward to competing on Saturday," said Cram.
