Blazers Split Georgia Road Trip

Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Belhaven women's basketball team (4-2, 1-1 SSAC) saw their three game winning streak come to an end Saturday evening with their first Southern States Athletic Conference loss. The 66-56 defeat came at the hands of the undefeated College of Coastal Georgia (6-0, 2-0 SSAC), and the Blazers split their first conference road trip of the season.

"We played the best team we have seen so far this year," Head Coach Rusty Cram said. "We hate to let one get away from us, but they did what they had to do to win."

Freshman guard Ariel Wilson once again led all scorers with 20 points, including a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. Teammate TaShayla Steede recorded another big night with 12 points and 13 rebounds to achieve her second double-double in as many games.

"Ariel's consistency has been unbelievable this season, and TaShayla is making teams pay when they take Erika LeFlore out of our game plan," Cram said. "If we can get all three of them in the mix regularly, we should have success moving forward."

Though Cram was pleased with his team's defensive effort, the Lady Mariners saw four players reach double figures in the point's column.

Madel Madden paced the Lady Mariner attack with 16 points, Olivia Melvin followed with 15, and Gianna Vastola and Krysta Lewis added 14 apiece. Vastola also snagged 16 rebounds, good enough for a game-high.

"We played a very good basketball team tonight, and they made it hard for us to score," Cram said. "This game was more about what they did well than what we didn't do well."

The Blazers were outshot 41% to 33% from the field and outrebounded by a tally of 38-18. Belhaven sunk 16 of 23 shots from the free throw line, while the Lady Mariners shot just 11 for 17. For the sixth consecutive game, Belhaven bested their opponents in three point percentage, easily outshooting Coastal Georgia 75% to 25%.

Belhaven returns to action on Wednesday, when they will play host to Wiley College in a non-SSAC matchup. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 pm at Rugg Arena.

"We got better out of this road trip, and we refuse to settle for just competing," Cram said. "Our girls are really buying in, and we know we can play at a high level."
