Blazers Preparing for Saturday’s Home Opener against Louisiana College

JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven football team will look to rebound on Saturday when the team faces off against Louisiana College at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers fell 21-10 last week in their season opener at University of the Cumberlands (KY).

Series vs. Louisiana College (2-2): This will be the fifth meeting between the Blazers and Wildcats.
 
Home Opener: Saturday night's game will be the 2012 home opener for Belhaven. Head Coach Joe Thrasher is entering his fourth season and under his direction the team is 2-1 in home openers. Belhaven excelled in the friendly confines of H.T. Newell Field last season as evidenced by a 5-1 home record.
 
Quick Stat: Senior kicker James “Bo” Bryan ranks third in the NAIA in punting going into week two of the season. Bryan punted the ball five times in week one and averaged 46.4 yards per kick. His longest punt traveled 76 yards. This is Bryan's first season handling both the punting and place kicking duties.
 
Picking up right where they left off: Senior running back Justin Gaines paced the Belhaven ground attack last week with 74 yards on 14 carries. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry in the loss to Cumberlands. Gaines led the Blazers in 2011 with 977 rushing yards and 12 TD's.
 
Junior defensive back Justin Mims picked off his first pass of the season last week after leading the Blazers with four in 2011. Mims also contributed five tackles, was credited with two pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
 
Stats don't always tell the whole story: On offense last week at Cumberlands, the Blazers held the edge in total yards (394-286) and time of possession (36:27) while the defense held one of the nation's best running teams to 165 yards on the ground. The Patriots averaged almost 250 yards per game rushing in 2011.
