JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Women's Soccer team had the tough task of stopping second ranked Lee University on Saturday afternoon in a Southern States Athletic Conference contest. The talented Flames were able to exploit an exhausted and injury-depleted Belhaven defense for six first half goals and held on to a 6-0 victory.
Belhaven (4-7, 2-2 SSAC) started the day without two of their starters on defense due to injury, senior
Katie McCain and junior
Chelsea DeLeon. To make matters worse, the Blazers lost another defender early in the first half, freshman
Ashley Harber.
With a highly potent offense, the injuries only helped the Flames take advantage of a precarious situation.
Lee (7-1, 4-0 SSAC) striker Ode Fulutudilu got the scoring started for the Flames in the 15th minute off of a pass from Christina Bovbjerg. Only three minutes later, Fulutudilu gathered another ball from the midfield and sent a through ball to Charlotte Canlett who was able to finish the play for their second goal of the day.
The Flames kept the pressure on the Blazer defense and didn't allow Belhaven to get any kind of offensive opportunities. Each time the Blazers attempted to get the ball past midfield, the Lee defense would clear the ball back up to the attackers.
In the 33rd minute, Fulutudilu was a part of another scoring opportunity for the Flames, sending a ball into the goal area. Danielle Ciabattone was able to break free of the Blazer player marking her on the play and head the ball past goalkeeper
Nicole Walsh to make it a 3-0 contest.
Lee added three goals in the final five minutes of the first half against an undermanned Belhaven defense to stretch the lead to its final 6-0 score.
Walsh added ten outstanding saves despite the circumstances and looked very good on a number of plays in the second half to keep the Flames from adding to their score.
Belhaven now has five days to rest and regroup before SSAC foe Faulkner University comes to town on Thursday for 5:00 PM start at H.T. Newell Field.
