Blazers Handle Tennessee Wesleyan 5-0

Box Score
MONTGOMERY, Ala.-The Belhaven men's soccer team turned in another dominating performance on Saturday afternoon, chalking up a 5-0 victory over Tennessee Wesleyan College (RV). The Blazers, ranked 17th in the NAIA Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll, set the tone of the match with an early goal and controlled all 90 minutes of the match.

Belhaven's Victor Lawrence put the Blazers on top in the third minute sending in a goal off an assist from Will Monsour. It was Lawrence's fourth goal of the 2012 campaign and the second assist of the year for Monsour.

Monsour notched Belhaven's second goal just over eight minutes later when he collected a rebound off of goalkeeper Clark Lydon and blasted into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Monsour then set up a goal by Guilherme Sousa in the first five minutes of the second half and was credited with his second assist of the game.

Monsour and Sousa reversed roles on the next goal in the 63rd minute with Sousa delivering a perfect pass to Monsour for the score. Nasser Chariff and Paul Tanguy capped the match and a perfect weekend in the 69th minute when the duo teamed up for the fifth and final goal of the contest. Chariff earned the goal and Tanguy notched the assist.

Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon said the match was an outstanding all around performance. “Today was a total team effort in the win. Yesterday they (Tennessee Wesleyan) tied 9th ranked Auburn University-Montgomery and we knew how good of a team they were. We changed our lineup at several positions and our depth was the key today.”

Another key was Monsour, who continued his hot start to the season. Monsour scored five goals last weekend and posted four more against SCAD Savannah and Tennessee Wesleyan this weekend. Add in the two assists, and Monsour 's point total has exploded to 21 points through the first four matches of 2012.

Belhaven outshot Tennessee Wesleyan 18-5 and kept the Bulldogs out of the attacking zone with solid defense. Belhaven goalie Carl Blundell made one save and gained the win in net to go to 4-0 on the season. Luke Winter had the only shot on goal for Tennessee Wesleyan (1-1-1). Lydon allowed all five goals and made three saves.

The Blazers will play their home opener on Saturday against Texas College at H.T. Newell Field beginning at 2:00 PM.
