Blazers Edge Savannah College of Art and Design

Box Score
MONTGOMERY, Ala.-The Belhaven men's soccer team picked up right where it left off last weekend thanks to a 2-1 victory over Savannah College of Art and Design at the Auburn University-Montgomery Tournament Friday afternoon. The Blazers posted two wins to open the 2012 campaign a weekend ago and remain unbeaten after Friday's contest. Junior Will Monsour added two more goals to his season total, accounting for both of Belhaven's scores against SCAD.

Belhaven (3-0) never trailed in the match although they had to hold off a late rally by the Bees to preserve the win. The match stayed scoreless until the 20th minute when Monsour broke free from a pack of defenders, maneuvered around goalkeeper Josh Brown and placed the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Both defenses dominated for the rest of the first half and late into the second period before the two teams traded goals in the final two minutes. Monsour struck again for Belhaven in minute 89 and it turned out to be the difference in the game. Freshman Paul Tanguy set up Monsour on another breakaway as he once again beat Brown one on one, giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead.

SCAD (0-1) didn't give up and fought to stay in the match on Richard Langthorne's first goal of the season with less than a minute to go. Brinton Nute fed him the ball with a perfect pass in front of the net to setup the shot. Fortunately, it would be the Bee's final surge on offense as the Blazer defense kept the ball away from the zone as time expired.

“Today was a great test for us on the road,” said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. “We didn't play particularly well, but still found a way to get a win. Give a lot of credit to SCAD on how well they played. They were really organized and caused us a lot of problems.”

Monsour's hot start to the season has resulted in seven goals and one assist giving him 15 points and three game winning goals so far in 2012. Monsour had three of Belhaven's 14 shots Friday and as it turned out SCAD also got 14 shots away in the game. The key difference is that Belhaven ended the afternoon with nine shots on goal compared to four for the Bees.

Belhaven goalie Carl Blundell played all 90 minutes in front of the net and stopped three shots en route to his third win of the year. Brown made seven saves on the other end of the field for SCAD.

The Blazers will be back on the field Saturday in Montgomery as they meet up with Tennessee Wesleyan to close out the weekend. The match is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
