HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Belhaven softball team dropped their final showdown of the season with Southern States Athletic Conference foe William Carey University Friday night in a double header in Hattiesburg. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, lost both games by the final score of 3-0. Belhaven finishes the regular season with an overall record of 23-22 and 9-14 in SSAC play.
Game One
Belhaven did manage eight hits but couldn't convert any of those hits to render any runs in game one of the night. William Carey (40-8, SSAC 17-4) got all three of their runs in three different innings of play. The first came in the bottom of the third from a double and then Crusaders collected their next run in the bottom of the fifth from a Hannah Cook-Kelley single. She also hit the double for the Crusaders that accounted for the first run. William Carey tacked on its last run in the bottom of the sixth a homerun by Kayleigh Anspach that put her team up 3-0. The Blazers had one last chance in the top of the seventh inning, but only managed one hit.
Catcher
Katie Sanders led the Blazers in hits with two while six other Blazers all produced one hit apiece;
Taylor Bryan,
Lizzy Hess,
Courtney Fairley,
Annalee Carr,
CeCee Austin and
Jessica Paris.
Shelby Watson got the start in the circle working six innings. She gave up seven hits and three runs dropping her record to 6-4 on the season.
Hannah Cook-Kelley led William Carey in hits with two while also managing two RBIs from three at-bats. Lindsey Webb also had two hits while scoring two runs for the Crusaders. Alyssa Boutwell worked all seven innings for the Crusaders pitching a shutout with eight hits allowed. Boutwell bumped her win-loss record to 22-4 overall with the win.
Game Two
In the second game, both team remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. In fact, William Carey would score the only three runs of the game in the fourth. Alyssa Boutwell singled to center field to bring home Kayleigh Anspach and Hannah Cook-Kelley. Anspach and Cook-Kelley each hit a single earlier in the inning putting them in position to run home. The last run of the game touched home when Anna Lauren Fontenot tripled to center field, giving a 3-0 lead to the Crusaders.
Belhaven (23-22, SSAC 9-14) was led by
CeCee Austin who had two outs in three plate appearances. Following Austin,
Lizzy Hess,
Annalee Carr, and Chelsea recorded one hit apiece in the contest.
Bayleigh Babin pitched the entire game for the Blazers and received the loss allowing three runs on seven hits. She dropped to 8-8 in the circle on the season.
William Carey (41-8, SSAC 18-4) was led by Boutwell who had a team best two RBI. Boutwell and Jasmine Shelby collected two hits each for the Crusaders. In the circle, Kelsey Jo Smith improved her record to 9-0 on the season. She did not give up a run and limited Belhaven to five hits.
The Blazers are the number four seed from the SSAC West Division and will face Emmanuel, who is the fifth seed in the tournament, on Thursday in the opening round at 9:00 AM. For more information on this year's tournament in Columbus, GA click
