JACKSON, Miss.- Belhaven softball team lost a doubleheader against William Carey University Tuesday afternoon, falling 8-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game. The Blazers, who received votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, struggled against the 7th ranked Crusaders. Belhaven now holds a 22-17 record for the season and are 8-9 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
Game One
The Crusaders took the advantage in the top of the third inning, scoring seven runs. Casey Alexander singled up the middle and reached home plate on Belhaven center fielder
Lizzy Hess's error. Kelsey Jo Smith added a second run for the crusaders on an error by shortstop
Courtney Fairley's throwing error. Alyssa Boutwell ran to home plate on a Jasmine Shelby singled through the left side and then Kayleigh Anspach gave a seven run advantage to the Crusaders, hitting a homerun to left field that brought home Megan Monk and Ann Lauren Fontenot.
The Blazers replied in the bottom of the third with
Jordan Adams scoring a run to reduce William Carey's advantage to 7-1. In the bottom of the fifth,
Courtney Fairley singled through the left side giving
Katie Sanders time to cross the and add the second run for the Blazers.
Belhaven gave up a last run in the top of the seventh inning when Fontenot singled up the middle allowing Chelcela Jones to score for the Crusaders, bringing the final score to 8-2 in favor of William Carey.
Belhaven (22-16, SSAC 8-8) was led by catcher
Katie Sanders who had two hits in three at bats, scoring one run.
Lizzy Hess and
Courtney Fairley notched a RBI apiece for the Blazers. In the circle,
Jessica Paris took the loss, dropping her record to 8-7 on the season. She allowed three hits and five runs.
Megan Timbs pitched five innings for the Blazers giving up three runs on four hits.
Kayleigh Anspach led William Carey with three RBI, two hits and one run. Following Anspach was Anna Lauren Fontenot had two hits, one run and one RBI. Alyssa Boutwell pitched the entire game for the Crusaders improving her record to 18-3 on the season. She allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking two batters.
Game Two
The Blazers jumped out on top early when
Lizzy Hess scored on a throwing error by the William Carey's leftfielder to give the Blazers an early on 1-0 advantage. William Carey quickly responded in the top of the second inning putting up five runs off five hits. Kayleigh Aspanch got things started with an RBI double. The Crusaders got their three other runs on fielding errors by the Blazers placing the Crusaders on top 5-1.
William Carey's Anna Lauren Fontenot tacked on another run, hitting a solo homerun to centerfield. William Carey continued to pile on the runs in the top of the sixth inning when Kelsey Jo Smith hit a single to put the Crusaders out in front 7-1. Hannah Cook-Kelly followed Smith's hit with two RBIs on a single up the middle. Kelly's hit would be the hit to essentially wrap up the game for the Crusaders at 9-1, putting the eight run rule into effect when the Blazers failed to score in the bottom of the sixth.
Lizzy Hess led Belhaven (22-17, SSAC 8-9) with a three hits in three at bats, scoring the only run for the Blazers. In the circle,
Bayleigh Babin received the loss while pitching 2.1 innings. She allowed six runs on seven hits.
Megan Timbs pitched three innings giving up three runs on four hits.
William Carey (34-7, SSAC 11-3) was led by Hannah Cook-Kelley with an impressive four runs and four RBI. Kayleigh Anspach followed Cook-Kelley, earning two RBI and one hit. In the circle, Kelsey Jo Smith got the win for the Crusaders pitching four innings without giving up a run on just two hits.
The Blazers will be back in action this Friday on the road at the University of Mobile for a doubleheader starting at 5:00PM.
