Box Score vs. OBU Box Score vs. Union
HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Belhaven lost a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at the William Carey University Invitational falling to Oklahoma Baptist University 3-2 and Union University (TN) 7-6.
Oklahoma Baptist opened the scoring in the top of the second inning scoring a single run to go up 1-0. Dara Gray singled to shallow center sending home Candace Holden to give the Bison a lead. The Bison added another run in the top of the third inning with the help of Krystal Johnson a she took advantage of a wild pitch by Belhaven's pitcher
Jessica Paris. The Blazers answered in the bottom of the third when
CeCee Austin singled to center giving enough time for
Lizzy Hess to run home cutting the deficit to 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blazers tied the game at 2-2 when
Courtney Fairley singled to shallow right-center, moved to second on
Katie Sanders SAC bunt, and reached home on a error Oklahoma Baptist shortstop Ashley Clifton. Unfortunately, the Bison scored a third run in the top of the seventh, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of Oklahoma Baptist. Clifton walked and scored the winning run on a Candace Holden single to left field.
CeCee Austin carried the Blazers (13-9, SSAC 2-2) with an RBI and one hit. Also,
Jordan Adams and
Courtney Fairley notched a hit for Belhaven. In the circle,
Jessica Paris pitched a complete game for the Blazers, allowing three runs on nine hits. She was served the loss dropping her record to 4-3 on the season.
Oklahoma Baptist (13-12) was led by Candace Holden who had one RBI on two hits with a run scored. Dara Gray also had a RBI and followed with one hit. Noelle McDowell went the distance in the circle, holding the Blazers to two runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Blazers fought hard in game in game two of the day, but fell short against Union University. Neither team put a run on the board until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Blazers scored when
Lizzy Hess ripped an RBI double rounding in
Emily Tucker and
Kayla Maldonado to send the Blazers out in front 2-0.
Annalee Carr followed Hess with a double to deep right bringing in
Lizzy Hess, giving the Blazers a 3-0 advantage.
Union answered the Blazers three runs with five runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Katie Davis put the Bulldogs on the board with a single to shallow right center plating her teammates Saunders and Spence. Keaton Kirk then hit a triple to deep right center allowing Sanders and Giesler to score, moving the Bulldogs out in front 4-3. Kirk was then able to score the last run of the inning from a single off the bat of Tobie Joy placing Union on top 5-3.
The Blazers had their last chance at bat in the top of the seventh and answered the call, posting two runs to even the contest up at five all.
Annalee Carr got her second hit of the contest singling to center chasing home
Taylor Bryan. The Blazers got the tying run at from a wild pitch by pitcher Kelly Robey, permitting
Joyce Smith to cross the plate. Union couldn't come up with any runs in the bottom of the seventh sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Blazers managed a run from short stop
Courtney Fairley who scored on an RBI fielder's choice from
Katie Sanders vaulting the Blazers out in front 6-5. Unfortunately, Union rallied in the 8th scoring two runs off two hits when Sam Gresiler grounded out to second plating Fesmire making the score six all. Keaton Kirk then drove the game winning double to deep left scoring Williams for 7-6 Union victory.
The Blazers collected seven hits in the contest with third baseman
Annalee Carr leading the way with two and two RBIs. Center fielder
Lizzy Hess also had two RBIs in the contest while managing a hit and a run scored.
Shelby Watson started in the circle for the Blazers and took the loss allowing 10 hits and five runs.
Stephanie Sanders and Keaton Kirk led Union in hits with three apiece while Keaton had a team best three RBIs. Kelly Robey started in the circle and picked up the win improving her season record to 10-1. Robey gave up seven hits and six runs in eight innings of work in the contest.
Belhaven will now head to Blue Mountain College (MS) for a doubleheader starting at 4:00PM on Monday.
