GULF SHORES, Ala.-The Belhaven softball team won two out of three games on day two of Gulf Shores Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Blazers outscored Bryan College 10-0 in the morning, and split the two evening games, loosing against Madonna University 7-2 while coming back for a win in the final game against Campbellsville University 4-3. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, improve their season record to 13-6.
Game One
Belhaven started the game with a 1-0 advantage over Bryan in the top of the first inning when
Lizzy Hess crossed the plate by walking and then stealing second, third and home.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Blazers entering in the top of the fifth inning.
Annalee Carr doubled to center field allowing
Joyce Smith to score the first run of the frame for the Blazers.
Anna Matthews pinch ran for Carr at second and took advantage of
CeCee Austin's doubled to extend the lead to 3-0. Finally,
Courtney Fairley singled to left center, bringing Austin home pushing the score to 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, the Blazers kept their momentum by adding six more runs for a 10-0 edge.
Jessica Paris singled down to left field line allowing
Jordan Adams to run home for Belhaven.
Annalee Carr singled and added two more RBI's when
Jessica Paris and
Taylor Bryan ran to home plate bringing the score to 7-0 for Belhaven. The Blazers remained hot when
CeCee Austin blasted her fourth homerun of the season, plating Carr, Hess, and herself for a 10-0 advantage. The sixth proved to be the final inning as Bryan failed to avoid the run rule.
Belhaven (12-5, 2-0 SSAC) was led by
CeCee Austin who had a homerun, four RBI's, two runs scored and two hits.
Annalee Carr also had a homerun and followed with three RBI's, two hits and a run.
Jessica Paris pitched five innings, allowing one hit and one walk improving her record to 4-1 this season.
Megan Timbs closed the game and fired one inning allowing one hit.
Beka James and Valarie Raper carried the Lions with one hit each. Shana Chappell was charged with the loss surrendering 10 runs on 10 hits while playing the six innings in the circle.
Game Two
In game two, the Blazers found themselves behind early against Madonna University 2-0 when designated player Caitlyn Keuvelaar put the Crusaders up in the top of the second, hitting a homerun to left center plating Hallie Minch. Madonna University continued to capitalize with their bats staying hot in top of the 5th inning getting two runs from three hits. Jackie Barley hit a single to left allowing Amber Rafko to score. Erin Mayes followed Barley with a single up the middle to round in Arielle Cox for the run placing the Crusaders out in front 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, the Crusaders added three more runs to their total. Caitlyn Keuvelaar got her second hit of the contest with a double to left center rounding in three of her teammates; Minch, Kristen Drabek and Kiley Thornton for runs placing the Blazers down 7-0. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Blazers did make a push putting two runs on the board from a
Chelsea Randle single to center field that chased home
Jessica Paris for the score.
Taylor Bryan would follow with a single to left center brining in Randle, but it didn't put a big enough dent in deficit as the Crusaders claimed a 7-2 victory.
The Blazers got four hits in the contest with four different players getting one hit a piece; Bryan, Hess, Fairley and Randle.
Taylor Bryan and
Chelsea Randle tabbed the only RBIs for the Blazers.
Bayleigh Babin's win-loss record dropped to 5-3, pitching five innings allowing four runs and seven hits.
The Crusaders had four different players with two hits apiece; Barley, Mayes, Minch and Keuvelaar. Caitlyn Keuvelaar led the team in RBIs with five and a run scored. Hallie Minch would receive the win with seven innings of work, giving up two runs off four hits.
Game Three
Belhaven went up early in the contest placing two runs on the broad in the top of the first inning.
Annalee Carr stepped up to hit a double to left center rounding in
Joyce Smith.
Lizzy Hess, after singling to left, scored from a
CeCee Austin SAC fly giving the Blazers a 2-0 advantage. Campbellsville answered with a run making it 2-1 in the bottom of the second when Courtney Turpin hit a double to right center allowing Heather Oakley to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, Heather Oakley scored an unearned run from an error by second baseman
Jordan Adams evening the score at 2-2. Belhaven responded in the top of the 6th when
Jessica Paris hit a two run double brining in
Kayla Maldonado and
Emily Tucker, sending the Blazers back in front 4-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Alyssa Barker cut the deficit to one at 4-3 on the strength of a double down left field line allowing Kara Reece to score. Reece's run would be the last of the contest as the Blazers pulled out the 4-3 victory.
Lizzy Hess led the Blazers with three hits and one run scored.
Jessica Paris turned in two RBI's on one hit, while four other Blazers managed one hit apiece; Smith, Carr, Tucker and Maldonado.
Shelby Watson got the start in the circle working all seven innings giving up 10 hits and three runs. Watson boosted her win-loss record to 4-2.
Heather Oakley led the Tigers with three hits and two runs scored. Kristin Benton and Bailey Dillender both got two hits apiece while Barker and Turpin turned in one RBI each. Courtney Turpin received the loss for the Tigers giving up eight hits and four runs.
Belhaven will take the field again on March 16, hosting Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Auburn University-Montgomery. The first pitch is set for 1pm (DH) at McLeod Field.
