Blazers Split Doubleheader at Delta State

Cleveland, Miss- The Belhaven softball team split a doubleheader with Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss on Wednesday evening winning the first game 6-4 while losing the second 5-4. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, see their record go to 7-4 on the season.

Game One
Delta State (8-6) opened the contest with two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a Brook Cline a single up to the middle and an error on second baseman Taylor Bryan that allowed the second run to come in. Delta state remained hot in the bottom of the second inning adding two more runs as Jordan Cole hit a homerun to the left field making it a 4-0 game.

Belhaven University answered in the top of the third with a run by Joyce Smith that was recorded on a CeCee Austin single to left field. The Blazers kept the momentum in the top of the fourth inning reducing the gap to 4-2, adding their second run of the evening. Joyce Smith cashed in the run on a single to left center that chased home Taylor Bryan.
In the top of the sixth inning, CeCee Austin gave the lead to the Blazers on a three double to left field making it a 5-4 game in favor of the Blazers. In the top of the seventh inning, Jessica Paris homered to left center adding the last run of game one.

Bayleigh Babin started in the circle for the Blazers and pitched the entire game, allowing four runs, and nine hits. Babin walked one batter en route to the win that improved her record to 4-1 this season. Belhaven was led by CeCee Austin who had four hits, and a game high four RBI's. Joyce Smith went 3 to 4 at the plate with one RBI and a pair of runs scored. Jessica Paris also had one RBI, one run and two hits with one being her first career home run.

Jordan Cole was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and had a pair of runs to lead Delta State at the plate. Taylor Holland had one run and two hits for the Statesmen. Brittany Gonzales started in the circle for Delta State allowing 12 hits and five runs. Relief pitcher Ashleigh Allgood pitched 1.1 innings giving up one run and two hits, but Gonzales received loss in the contest.

Game Two
Belhaven got things going early plating a run in the top of the first inning. Annalee Carr stepped up to the plate to bring in Joyce Smith on an RBI single giving the Blazes a 1-0 advantage. The Blazers continued to stay hot in the top of the second inning posting three runs off five hits. Taylor Bryan hit a single allowing Chelsea Randle to score and the Blazers then got back to back to hits leading to a SAC fly by Annalee Carr making it  a 3-0 game. CeCee Austin put the Blazers in front 4-0, driving a single up the middle that sent in Joyce Smith for the run. 

In the bottom of the third, Delta State gained their first run of the game when Ashleigh Allgood hit a single up the middle turning in Amber Adcock for the run. The Statesmen then put up two more runs to cut the Blazer lead down to 4-3. Raina Stiffler hit a RBI double up the middle allowing Hughes and Cline to cross the plate for the Statesmen.

Belhaven held the lead until the bottom of the seventh inning when Taylor Holland doubled to right field bringing in Wilson to tie the game at four all. Amber Adcock then had the game winning single to center field Statesmen brining in Taylor Holland for the 5-4 victory.

Joyce Smith led the Blazers in hits with two going 2 of 3 at the plate with two runs scored while Annalee Carr had a team best two RBIs. As a team, Belhaven ended game two with eight hits. Shelby Watson received the loss in the circle for the Blazers, pitching six innings surrendering five runs on 11 hits.

The Statesmen generated 12 hits in the contests leading to the five runs. Five Delta State players all managed two hits apiece; Adcock, Cline, Allgood, Hughes, and Holland. Amber Adcock and Raina Stiffler both had two RBIs apiece. Allgood garbbed the win, pitching all seven innings for the Statesmen holding the Blazers to four runs on eight hits.

Belhaven will be back in action on Thursday, hosting NCAA Division I Alcorn State University at McLeod Field. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 PM.
