Blazers to Face Auburn-Montgomery in SSAC Opener

ROME, Ga.-The Belhaven women's basketball team will face Auburn University-Montgomery for the third time this season when the Blazers embark on their Southern States Athletic Conference tournament journey Thursday afternoon at The Forum in Rome, Ga. Belhaven has won both meetings of the season and will need to make it three in order to get back to the tournament semifinals.

Belhaven is 23-6 overall and own the top seed from the SSAC West Division on the strength of its second consecutive division title. The Blazers are already assured of a trip to the NAIA National Tournament, but would love to add an SSAC Championship to the resume. Belhaven is led by SSAC Player of the Year, senior guard Regena Jackson, who is averaging an NAIA and team best 24.2 points per game. Jackson has been a three time SSAC Player of the Week and was twice named NAIA National Player of the Week.

Belhaven also has two other outstanding guards in junior Sarah Carr and senior Kiara Johnson. Carr is averaging 10 points per game and has drilled a team best 62 triples. Johnson fires in 9.2 points per contest and is a tough defender with 74 steals coming into the tournament. In the post, senior forward Portia Tucker, sophomore forward Ericka Leflore, and senior forward Jessica Barlow anchor the paint. Tucker is averaging 9.6 points per game and 4.7 rebounds while Leflore hauls down a team best 6.3 rebounds per night. Barlow is averaging 6.1 points per game and 5.3 rebounds each time she takes the floor.

Auburn-Montgomery is now 14-15 after defeating Brewton-Parker College 45-32 in the opening round game on Wednesday. The Senators are led in scoring by Keisha Moore with 12.7 points per game followed closely by Lakenya Drayton at 9.4 points per contest. Drayton is also AUM's best rebounder at 7.1 boards per game. The Senators are the number five seed out of the West Division and their only chance to make it to the big dance is by clinching the tournament's automatic bid.
