Blazers Stop Mississippi Valley State in Season Opener

JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven softball team scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 win over NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State University Thursday afternoon 3-2. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, scored the winning run on a two out base hit by third baseman Annalee Carr that drove in Lizzy Hess for the score.

Mississippi Valley State started the game hot when Kishti Kamaka doubled to left center allowing Brianna Holmes to score the first run of the contest. Nicole Burr then hit a double out to right field sending Kamaka in to score extending the Devillettes advantage to 2-0.

The Blazers got back in the game in the bottom of the third inning with the help of Courtney Fairley. Fairley walked, stole second and scored on an error by Brianna Holmes. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Katie Sanders scored the second run for the Blazers, evening the score at 2-2 on a wild pitch by Kimberly Spivey with the bases loaded.
Mississippi Valley State did manage to load the bases at the top of the seventh inning, but could not score a run as relief pitcher Shelby Watson held serve. In the bottom of the seventh, Belhaven scored the go ahead run on the Carr RBI single, as the Blazers claimed a 3-2 win.

Belhaven (1-0) was led by Carr who went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. Hess, Jordan Adams, Shelby Watson, and Taylor Bryan also had one hit each. Bryan put the Blazers on the board in the third on an RBI single to left field. Bayleigh Babin started in the circle for the Blazers and pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout. Shelby Watson earned the win in relief tossing a scoreless 2.1 innings without surrendering a hit. Watson walked one and struck out three.

Mississippi Valley State (0-1) was led by Kishti Kamaka and Nicole Burr with two hits and an RBI apiece. Alicia Lorenz was tagged with the loss as she fired 1.2 innings allowing one run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Kimberly Spivey pitched the first five innings and gave up two runs on three hits.

Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday hosting NCAA Division Jackson State University in a doubleheader at McCloud Field starting at 1:00 PM.
