Blazers Eight Game Win Streak Ends with Loss at William Carey

Box Score
HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Belhaven men's basketball team lost for the first time against a Southern States Athletic Conference West Division opponent Saturday night, falling on the road at William Carey University 75-65. The Blazers eight game winning streak that started on January 12th also ended with the loss.

Belhaven (14-12, 9-6 SSAC) had an uphill climb in the second half after William Carey (10-15, 6-8 SSAC) built a 27 point half time lead. The Crusaders stormed out the gate in the opening period scoring the first 11 points of the game. The Blazers finally produced their first bucket at the 16:08 mark on a jumper by sophomore guard Chris Cofield. William Carey ended up leading the game from start to finish.

The Blazers eventually closed the gap down to six points at 63-57 with 4:46 left to play in the game on a field goal by senior forward Brittion Smith. Trailing 63-41 with 8:18 remaining, Belhaven engineered a 16-0 run that culminated on the Smith basket. However, the Crusaders went on a 10-3 run that built their lead back to 13 with just over a minute to play. At that point, the deficit was too much for Belhaven to overcome.

The Blazers were led on offense by senior forward Daryl Arnold with a game high 24 points. Arnold made 8 of his 11 shots from the floor and went 8 for 10 at the free throw line. Arnold has now scored at least 23 points in each of his last three games. Senior guard Woodie Howard fired in 13 points and Chris Cofield chipped in 12 points. Andrew Marshall had a team best seven rebounds and also produced six points.

The Blazers were 25 of 58 from the field (43.1%) and struggled at the free throw line shooting at a 48.1% clip at the charity stripe (13-27). On the boards, Belhaven was outrebounded 36-29.

William Carey had four players in double figures, led by Jaron Edwards with 15 points. Jamal Doss dropped in 14 points, Roderick Little posted 13 points, and Devarus Walker ended the night with 10 points. Smith and Doss were both active on the boards with seven and six rebounds respectively. The Crusaders were 27 of 49 on shots from the field (55.1%)

Belhaven still controls the top spot in the SSAC West Division by a game over the University of Mobile and Loyola University by 1.5 games. The Blazers will meet up with Loyola in New Orleans on Thursday night at 7:30 PM. Belhaven won the first contest with the Wolfpack 89-82 on January 21st.
