Blazers Three Game Win Streak Snapped by Tougaloo

Box Score
TOUGALOO, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball team dropped the second game of the Tougaloo Classic against the host Lady Bulldogs Saturday night in Kroger Gymnasium. Tougaloo used a 10 point halftime lead to spark their way to a 70-59 victory on Saturday night.

Belhaven gutted out a win against a scrappy Talladega crew on Friday night, which set up the big rematch with the Lady Bulldogs. A short-handed Belhaven team played Tougaloo extremely tough back in November, but the Lady Bulldogs were too much in the end.

On Saturday night, the Lady Bulldogs (7-3) out played the Blazers (5-6) in two aspects of the game which ended up being the final difference.

The two teams took a similar amount of three-point shots coming into the contest, but Tougaloo took 10 more attempts from behind the arch than the Blazers did. Belhaven usually likes to work an inside-outside game that benefits both post players down low and their sharp-shooters, specifically Ashley Wakefield and Sarah Carr on the perimeter.

However, the Blazers were only one for five from three point land as opposed to the Lady Bulldogs 5-of-15 evening from three point range. The discrepancy in the amount of three pointers made changed the final outcome of the game.

Belhaven also struggled from the free-throw stripe, which has plagued them at times this year. They finished the game shooting 55 percent from the line, despite shooting a whopping 31 shots over the course of the contest.

Forward Erika Leflore had the tall task of guarding NCAA Division-I transfer Chasity Kearney for much of the evening. Leflore held Kearney under her season average shooting percentage, but Kearney was still able to scrap for 16 points. Leflore also wrangled away four offensive rebounds on her way to a status quo double-double, with 10 boards and 12 points.

The biggest difference maker for the Lady Bulldogs was guard Portia Craft. Craft shot over 50 percent from the field and buried three three-point shots on her way to a game high 26 points.

The speedy guard gave the Blazers fits all night, as she accounted for over a third of Tougaloo's scoring in the game. Ashley Wakefield (13 points) and Alisha Rayborn (11 points) were the only other two players to score more than 10 for Belhaven. Wakefield was also the only Blazer to not come out for a breather during the contest.

The Blazers will be able to rest during the Christmas holiday break before they reconvene for a winter tournament at Huntingdon College in Alabama. Belhaven will battle Xavier University (LA) on December 28th at 5:00 PM followed by a matchup with Georgetown College (KY) on December 29th at 7:00 PM.
