Blazer Bits
Game 7: Belhaven (3-4, 2-1 MSC) vs. Lindsey Wilson College (2-5, 0-2 MSC), Saturday October 20th 1:30 PM, in Columbia, KY. Blue Raider Stadium. Last Meeting: September 17th, 2011. (Lindsey Wilson 34 Belhaven 28)

Coaches: Joe Thrasher (Belhaven-4th Season), Chris Oliver (Lindsey Wilson- 3rd Season)

Series vs. Lindsey Wilson (1-1): Saturday's game will be the third meeting between the two programs.

Open Highway: After being shutdown on offense by Kentucky Christian, Belhaven's offense, specifically the ground attack, kicked it back in high gear last week against Bluefield. The Blazers smashed two more school records as the team ran for 385 yards, eclipsing the previous mark of 323 yards set last year against Faulkner. The other record to fall was largest margin of victory that previously stood at 55 points in a 58-3 win at Texas College in 2010. Belhaven also rolled to a season high of 555 yards of total offense and it marks the third time this season that the team has racked up at least 500 yards in a game. Belhaven set three new records in a 70-28 victory over Campbellsville earlier this season.

West Division Watch: Belhaven finds itself in the thick of the Mid-South Conference West-Division title chase, but as was the case last week, faces a must win against Lindsey Wilson. The Blazers trail Faulkner by a game in the standings and are a half game behind Bethel. Belhaven travels to Faulkner next weekend, but can't afford to look past Lindsey Wilson.

In the Spotlight: Justin Mims is this week's Blazer in the spotlight as well as the C Spire Athlete of the Week. Mims, a junior defensive back from Albany, GA, had another big week for the Blazers with five solo tackles and an interception return for a touchdown in Belhaven's 66-10 win over Bluefield. It was his fourth INT of the season and it was the second time he has taken one back for a TD. The four interceptions are a team high and fourth best in the NAIA. Mims has eight pass breakups and 12 passes defended so far this season. Mims is fifth in the nation in passes defended per game (1.7).

Quick Stats: Belhaven's offense and defense are both in the top 20 in multiple categories when it comes to the NAIA national statistical rankings. We'll start with the offense where the team jumped to ninth in total scoring at 251 points following last week's win. The Blazers are 12th in total rushing yards (1547) and rushing yards per game (221). Belhaven is 14th in first downs per game (22) and 15th in points per game (35.9). On defense, the Blazers are seventh in pass defense effiency (92.6), 10th in pass defense per game holding opponents to 148 yards, and 14th in opponent first downs (103). Belhaven is also 20th in total defense (298.7 yards).

Tale of the Tape: Belhaven holds the edge in the running game while Lindsey Wilson's passing attack has been their strength this season. The Blazers are averaging 221 yards rushing per game compared to Lindsey Wilson with 111.6 yards. Lindsey Wilson's air attack covers 262.4 yards per afternoon while the Blazers put up 187.6 yards in the passing game each contest. The Blue Raiders have also dialed up 275 pass plays compared to Belhaven with 165 pass plays called on the season. In total yards, Belhaven is outgaining the Blue Raiders 408.6 to 374 yards per game.
