CLEVELAND, Ga. – The Belhaven women's soccer team wasn't able to contain a Truett-McConnell attack in the second half and fell to the Bears 6-2 on Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
Entering the day, Belhaven and Truett-McConnell were heading in very different directions. The Blazers, fresh off a thrilling overtime victory over Southern Wesleyan on Friday, found themselves with a 4-3 record in conference and possessing a firm grasp on the seventh slot in the SSAC standings.
With a victory, Belhaven would put themselves in control of their own destiny for the playoffs. A loss to Truett-McConnell would leave the door open for other teams to get back in the playoff hunt.
Truett-McConnell was 1-6 in the SSAC entering Saturday afternoon's game and presented a classic “trap game” for Belhaven, with three ranked opponents on the horizon for the Blazers to finish out the regular season.
The two teams were held scoreless for much of the first half due to fantastic keeper play on both ends of the field. However, the opportunistic Bears broke through the ranks of the Belhaven defense in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead off the foot of Joy Smith.
Belhaven would have been happy with a manageable one-goal deficit at the half, but Truett-McConnell had other ideas. Midfielder Mallory Reynolds tallied the second goal of the game for the Bears with two minutes to play in the half for a two-goal halftime lead.
The Blazers got on the board only minutes after play resumed in the second period, as
Jordan Organ blasted a ball into the net.
However, the celebrating was short lived for Belhaven. Truett-McConnell added two more goals in the next ten minutes to take a commanding 4-1 lead of the match.
Belhaven got another score for
Jordan Organ, but it was too late to mount a comeback. The two goals scored by Organ, matched the number of goals she had coming into the game.
Truett-McConnell added two goals late to pull off the impressive 6-2 victory.
Belhaven has a week to regroup before their home match with No. 4 Mobile at home on Saturday. Following that matchup, the Blazers will have matches with No. 5 William Carey and No. 12 AUM to finish out the year.
