CLINTON, Miss. – The Belhaven Men's and Women's Cross Country teams returned to their “home” course at Choctaw Trails to run in the Mississippi College Choctaw Open on Saturday morning.
The Belhaven women were led by C-Spire Athlete of the Week,
Chloe Brown, who finished in 82nd place out of 166 runners. Brown finished in just over 22 minutes and had a pace of 7:08 minutes per mile.
Following her was
Sarah McCallister in 106th,
Sarah Rivera in 122nd and
Seraphine Lin in 129th. The Blazers were unable to score as a team because they didn't field five healthy runners for the meet. Belhaven still showed well in the meet and would have been right in the thick of the team scoring if they possessed a healthy fifth runner.
On the men's side,
Thorburn McGee paced the Blazers as he has done for much of the 2012 schedule. McGee finished the 8k event in 29:44.55, which was good for 76th place.
Freshman
Ben Storment crossed the finish line second for Belhaven, only 30 seconds after McGee. Storment was the 86th runner to finish.
The two leaders were followed by freshman Matthew Fox in 95th,
Andrew Sinclair in 106th and
John Lane in 107th. Sinclair and Lane finished within half a second of each other, which propelled the Blazers to a 17th overall team finish. Belhaven finished ahead of Division I Jackson State, who finished in 20th.
South Alabama had the most successful day on the course, taking home both the women's and men's team trophies. Their top five men all finished in the top 10 on the day.
The two teams will get their final tune-up before the SSAC Championship next Saturday, when they travel to Hardeeville, South Carolina for the Sand Shark CC Invitational at 9 a.m.
The SSAC Championships will be hosted by Belhaven at Choctaw Trails on the first Saturday of November.
