CLEVELAND, Ga.-The Belhaven men's soccer team found its way back into the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 win at Southern States Athletic Conference foe Truett-McConnell. A victory eluded the 5th ranked Blazers in each of their last two matches that ended in a loss and a tie.
Belhaven (13-1-1, 6-1-1 SSAC) set the tone for match in the 15th minute when sophomore midfielder
Victor France unleashed the first of his two goals on the afternoon. France worked the ball around goalkeeper Craig Stephenson pushing the ball into the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, France delivered his second unassisted goal of the match and four goal overall this season to extend the lead to 2-0. Belhaven then went up 3-0 thanks to a strike by freshman
Rodrigo Suarez that found the back of the net in the 33rd minute. Junior forward
Eduardo Cruz chipped in with what would prove to be the only assist for either side in the match.
Sophomore midfielder
Victor Lawrence was the next Blazer to put his name in the stat sheet when he connected on his seventh goal of the season. Lawrence made a couple of quick moves in the box and blasted the shot past a diving Stephenson for a 4-0 Blazer lead. Lawrence is now second in scoring on the team this season behind junior forward
Will Monsour who has 17 goals.
Truett-McConnell (3-8-1, 0-7-1 SSAC) avoided the shutout in the 66th minute when Michael Antoniewicz punched a shot past Blazer goalie
Steeven Raymont bringing the match to a 4-1 score. The final goal of the afternoon belonged to the Blazers as senior defender
Tom Cosgrave tucked a shot into the corner of the net for his third goal of the 2012 season.
Belhaven dominated from the opening kickoff to the final buzzer outshooting the Bears 24-7. The Blazers attack kept Truett-McConnell pinned back on their own end of the field the majority of the contest. France led Belhaven with six shots and Raymont only faced two shots on goal from the Bears, allowing one goal while preventing another.
Nils Conway had two shot attempts for the Bears and Stephenson made five saves in front of the net.
Belhaven returns home on Saturday to host 19th ranked Mobile at H.T. Newell Field. The kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
