Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team ran their record to 2-0 on Thursday night defeating NCAA Division II University of Arkansas-Monticello 3-0 in Rugg Arena. The final set scores were 25-23, 25-15, and 25-22.
The first set of the night started out rough for Belhaven as the Blazers trailed 18-13 with Arkansas-Monticello needing just seven points to take game one. However, Belhaven caught fire and tallied eight consecutive points to take a 21-18 lead in the set.
Alyson Plyler tied things up at 18-18 with an ace followed by a kill from
Samantha O'Malley and a block by
Erin Bradley to extend the edge to 21-18. The Cotton Blossoms managed to knot the score again at 21, but Atwood sent the Blazers back in front for good with a kill and
Natalie Davis off an assist by Bradley produced the final point of the set.
Belhaven came back in set two and dominated from start to finish as they raced out the gate to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. In the third game of the night, Arkansas-Monticello (0-1) battled back from a 20-12 deficit closing the gap to 23-21, but the Blazers were able to hold them off as Davis posted the final point of the game and match on a kill sending Belhaven to their second win of the season.
Belhaven was led on the offensive side of the floor by
Samantha O'Malley who registered 11 kills. O'Malley also had an ace along with two solo blocks and two block assists. Atwood ended the night with seven kills and Bradley chipped in with 22 assists.
Taylor Williams along with Plyler picked up seven digs on the defensive side of the net. As a team, Belhaven had 11 blocks, 32 kills, and a hitting percentage of .267.
Arkansas-Monticello was paced by Amy Kleypas who had 10 kills and five digs. Christina Rini notched seven kills while Amy Bazemore assisted on the Cotton Blossom's 30 team kills. Defensively, Christina Jacinto had a game high nine digs on the night.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday night as they travel to NCAA Division I Alcorn State University for another non-conference contest. The first serve is slated for 7:00 PM.
