Blazers Split Twin Bill against SSAC Rival William Carey

Ridgeland, MS- The Belhaven softball team split a doubleheader against Southern States Athletic Conference rival William Carey University Tuesday afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park. Belhaven took the first contest with some late game heroics in the bottom of the 7th inning 2-1. William Carey rebounded in the second game taking home a 5-3 victory.

Game One
In the top of the third William Carey gathered the first run of the contest as Judy Barber hit a sacrifice fly allowing Tan Montgomery to score giving the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage. The Blazers then rallied in the bottom of the seventh to put up two runs. Katie Sanders singled to left field plating Jessica Paris to tie the score up at one apiece. Christina Jaques then reached on a fielder's choice allowing Kayla Maldonado to score the game winning run.

The Blazers combined for five total hits in the contest with Kayla Maldonado leading the way with two. Sarah Burns started in the circle for the Blazers giving up four hits and one run. The win increased Burns season record to 27-5. Tan Montgomery led the Crusaders in hits with two. Anna Ard started in the circle for William Carey and up five hits and two runs.

Game Two
William Carey turned in two early runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jena Erickson hit a single to third base bringing in Casey Alexander and Tan Montgomery. The Crusaders followed up the top of the first with three runs in the top of the second. Judy Barber hit a three run homerun to left center plating Shayna Turner and Jena Erickson giving the Crusaders a 5-0 advantage.

The Blazers scored their first two runs in the bottom of the bottom of the second as Kayla Maldonado hit a triple down the right field line rounding in Rachel Wright for the run. Katie Sanders then reached on a fielder's choice bunt bringing in Maldonado for the score which cut the Crusader lead to three. In the fourth inning, Katie Sanders hit a single to the shortstop rounding in Rousseau for the run making the score 5-3. Sanders hit would be the last bright spot in the game for the Blazers as the Crusaders were able to hang on for a 5-3 win in game two.

Five different Blazers had hits with Jaques, O'Bannon, Rousseau, Maldonado and Sanders each collecting one. Sarah Burns pitched all seven innings for the Blazers giving up five hits and five runs. The loss drops Burn's season record to 26-7. Five different Crusaders got one hit apiece in the contest. Kelsey Jo Smith pitched all seven innings giving up five hits and three runs.

The Blazers earned their 40th win of the season and are now 40-10 overall and 12-8 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Tuesday's games marked the end of the regular season and now the Blazers will look forward to the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament in Columbus, GA beginning April 28th. Belhaven's opening round opponent and game time are yet to be determined.
