Blazers Sweep Eureka College Wednesday Night

Ridgeland, MS-The Belhaven softball team overpowered Eureka College Wednesday night taking both games of a doubleheader at Freedom Ridge Park. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, won game one 9-0 in five innings and followed that up with a five inning 8-0 victory in game two. Annalee Carr had a big night blasting three home runs and as a team Belhaven hit five round trippers in the two games.

Game One
Belhaven (18-3) pulled in the front in the first game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Carr walked in front of CeCee Austin who launched her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 2-0. In the second, Rachel Wright hit her fourth homer to extend the Blazers advantage to 3-0.

In the third inning, Belhaven added three more runs on a two run homer by Carr and then Austin came across the plate on a throwing error by catcher Emily Campbell extending the lead to 6-0. Belhaven then capped things off in the fourth inning as Carr went deep for another two run homer and Kayla Maldonado plated the ninth run of the game with a base hit to center field. The Blazers kept Eureka off the board in the top of the fifth inning as the eight run rule went into effect ending the game in five innings.

Carr was two for two at the plate with four runs batted in and three runs scored in game one. Austin was two for two with three runs scored and had two RBI's followed by Wright and Maldonado who each had one hit and one run batted in. As a team, the Blazers pounded out six hits and drew seven walks in the contest.

Sarah Burns got the start and pitched the first four innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out 11. Burns is now 10-2 on the season with a team high 91 strikeouts after picking up the win in the circle. Ashley Mottola closed the game in the fifth inning without surrendering a run or a hit. She issued a walk and struck out two opposing hitters.

Eureka (2-4) mustered only two hits as Tomi Tapper and Sara Hamilton each had singles. Kelsey Cochran suffered the loss allowing five runs on three hits in two innings of work. Caty Eeten pitched the final two innings and gave up four runs on three hits. Only one of the runs charged to Eeten was earned.

Game Two
Belhaven didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard in game two plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Austin singled home the first two runs as Carr and O'Bannon crossed home plate. Carr had doubled and O'Bannon walked ahead of Austin to set the table. Later in the inning, Katie Sanders stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and singled to left field. Three runs came in on the play as Sanders was credited with two runs batted in while the third run was due to a fielding error by leftfielder Lauren Kao.

In the second inning, Carr powered her third home run of the night over the center field fence to drive in two more runs giving her six RBI's in the two games. The Blazers notched their final run of the night in the third inning as Emily Tucker chased home Chelsea Randle with a base hit making the score 8-0. The Belhaven defense and bullpen kept Eureka off the board in the final two innings putting the eight run rule into effect once again.

Carr had two more hits including a home run and double and two more runs batted in to once again lead the Blazers on offense. Carr now has a team high nine home runs and 29 runs batted in this season. Sanders went 2 for 2 with two RBI's and Austin was 1 for 3 with two RBI's while Tucker collected one hit and one run batted in. Belhaven had eight hits in the second game and held Eureka to two hits in the game two.

Rebecca Rousseau started the game and pitched her way to the victory running her record to 7-1. Rousseau went three innings giving up just one hit while striking out five. Samantha Massoth logged one inning in relief surrendering one hit with one strikeout. Ashley Mottola pitched the fifth inning and did not give up a run or a hit.

Eeten and Amy Scammahorn had the only hits for Eureka in game two. Sarah Jesse pitched three innings and was charged with all eight runs on eight hits. She walked three and struck out one as the loss drops her record to 0-2 this season. Jill Doty recorded one inning in the circle and did not allow a run or a hit.

Belhaven will be back in action on Thursday morning as they take on Grand View University starting at 11:00 AM.
