Blazers Take Two at NCAA II Delta State University

Cleveland, MS- The Belhaven softball team defeated NCAA Division II Delta State University in double header on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers, ranked 12 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, took game one 3-0 as Sarah Burns pitched an eight inning no hitter. Belhaven then responded with an 11-3 victory in game two. The Blazers recorded six hits in the first game and turned in thirteen hits in the second game.

Game 1
The first game went into extra innings with the Blazers scoring the only three runs of the contest. Christina Jaques hit a double to bring in Kayla Maldonado for the Blazers first run. Rian O'Bannon hit a single allowing Lizzy Hess to score making it 2-0. Christina Jaques then scored an unearned run off an error by Todd the Delta State shortstop. The Blazers kept the Statesman off the board in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.

Annalee Carr led the Blazers in hits with two while Jaques and O'Bannon both picked up an RBI. Sarah Burns pitched a shutout which was her first of the season giving her a win-loss record of 7-2. Combs for DSU pitched all eight innings giving up three runs and six hits, suffering the loss in the circle dropping her record to 4-3.

Game 2
The Blazers put up one run in the first inning to take the early advantage as Rian O'Bannon scored on a wild pitch. In the third inning, the Blazers put up three runs and three hits. Annalee Carr scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the third basemen Church. CeeCee Austin scored on a SAC bunt by Rousseau and then Kayla Maldonado singled out to short stop to bring in Rachel Wright for the score extending the advantage to 4-0. In the top of the fourth Christina Jaques hit a solo homerun and Rachel Wright then hit a single to bring in Emily Tucker making the score 6-0.

The Blazers recorded five runs and four hits in the top of the fifth inning. O'Bannon hit a single to bring Katie Sanders for the score. CeeCee Austin then hit a grand slam homerun chasing home Jaques, Hess, and O'Bannon giving the Blazers an 11-0 advantage. Delta State put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but weren't able to rally enough runs to close the gap.

Annalee Carr led the way with three hits while CeeCee Austin scored two of the eleven runs. Rebecca Rousseau pitched four innings giving up four hits and no runs while picking up the win making her win-loss record 4-1. Ashley Mottola pitched the last inning allowing five hits and three runs. For DSU, Sanders led the way with two hits while Gonzales pitched all five innings giving up 13 hits and 11 runs dropping her record to 1-4.

The Blazers are now 11-3 on the season and 1-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference Play. The Blazers will be back in action on Thursday when they take on the Indiana Institute of Technology at 3:00 at Freedom Ridge Park.
