Jackson, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team got back on track Saturday afternoon after dropping a game to Xavier University 77-60 Wednesday night, with a win against Auburn University Montgomery in Rugg Arena by the final score 68-46. The Blazers are leading the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division with a 6-1 record and hold a game and a half lead on Faulkner who is in second place.
Belhaven (18-6, SSAC 6-1) was led on the offensive end of the floor by
Regena Jackson with 21 points and a team high seven assists.
Kiara Johnson tallied 15 points going 6-6 from the free throw line.
Jessica Barlow turned in 12 points and six rebounds while
Sarah Carr added 10 points to the mix. The Blazers outscored AUM 24-14 in points in the paint and turned in 23 points off of AUM turnovers.
Belhaven shot 47.1% from the field and 85% from the free throw line. The Blazers outscored AUM in the first half by six points 35-28. The Blazers kept it rolling in the second half out scoring AUM by fifteen points 33-18. The Blazers also won the battle of the boards out rebounding AUM 33-28.
AUM (10-14, SSAC 6-1) was led by Carlie Ainsworth with 9 points and three assists. Closely following Ainsworth was Haley McIntyre with 8 points while Kamesha Strong and Caitlin Cunningham both dropped in 7 points apiece. AUM shot 32% from the field and went 8-29 from three point land landing at 27.6%.
Belhaven got off to a fast start building a seven point lead with just five minutes gone by in the first half.
Regena Jackson hit a three with 11:19 to go to give the Blazers a ten point lead, but AUM then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to two on a pair of free throws by Haley McIntyre. With just five minutes left in the half,
Jessica Barlow hit a layup to give the Blazers an eleven point lead 31-20. AUM cut the lead to seven two free throws by Caitlin Cunningham making the score 35-28 at halftime.
Rachel Cunningham got AUM started in the second half with a layup within the opening seconds of the final period.
Kiara Johnson then extended the Blazers lead to eight with a layup at the 16:04 mark. The Blazers never looked back from that point on continuing to increase their lead. A free throw by Carr gave the Blazers a 17 point lead then a layup by Jackson racked their lead up to 19 points.
Sarah Carr then hit a dagger three pointer with just twenty one seconds left in the game to give the Blazers their largest lead of the night at 22 points leading to the 68-46 final score.
The win brings Belhaven's season record to 18-6 overall and 6-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference West Division play. The Blazers will look to stay hot as they travel to Mobile, Ala to take on the University of Mobile next Thursday beginning at 5:30 PM.
