Pensacola, FL- The Belhaven women's basketball team traveled to Pensacola Christian College Tuesday night defeating the Eagles 77-44. The Blazers were able to overpower PCC on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor.
Belhaven (23-6, 10-1 SSAC) was led by
Portia Tucker with 12 points. Following Tucker was
Sarah Carr with 11 points and
Amber Smith turned in nine points on the night. Every player on the Blazer roster managed to score at least two points in Tuesday night's contest. The Blazers as a team out rebounded the Eagles 39-28 and managed to outscore the Eagles in both the first and second half.
The Blazers shot 49.3% (33-67) from the field and 71.4% (10-14) from the charity stripe. The Blazers put up 48 points in the first half and 29 points in the second and had at least eight different players with a steal on the night with
Regena Jackson and
Jessica Barlow leading the way with three apiece.
Pensacola Christian College was led in scoring by Elisabeth Moreno with 10 points. Alexia Floyd and Candace Coleman both turned in 8 points on the night. The Eagles forced Belhaven into 12 turnovers while they committed 20 turnovers themselves. The Eagles shot 29.8% from the field and 80% from the free throw line.
The Blazers opened up the contest on an 8-0 run with
Jessica Barlow scoring four of the eight points while Carr and Johnson posted the other two scores. A layup by Elisabeth Moreno put the Eagles on the scoreboard with 16:25 left to go. The Blazers then went on an 8-3 run to give themselves a 16 point advantage at the 15:09 mark. Erika Leflore hit a jumper to give the Blazers a 21 point advantage.
Sierra Cavitt then hit a layup to give the Blazers a 30 point advantage going into halftime with the score being 48-18.
Portia Tucker opened up the second half with two consecutive baskets to give the Blazers a 34 point advantage with 18:50 left in the half. With 11:31 to go,
Keishara Rouser hit two free throws to give the Blazers a 40 point lead. Alexia Floyd hit a three with 1:34 left in the game to cut the lead to 35 and a pair of free throws by Lacey Anagnosto made the score 77-44 with just 10 seconds left in the contest.
Belhaven is now 23-6 on the season and 10-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The Blazers will face Spring Hill College in their regular season finale on Thursday night in Rugg Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Fans can follow all the action through live stats by clicking
