Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team won for the fifth straight time defeating NCAA Division I Jackson State University on Tuesday afternoon 5-1. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, scored three times in the first inning and never looked back en route to the win.
Belhaven (8-2) took advantage of an error to notch their three runs in the top of the first inning off of Jamerson who got the start for the Tigers.
Christina Jaques reached first to open the game on an error by Aikens and then moved to second base on a
Rian O'Bannon sacrifice bunt.
Annalee Carr then singled her in to make it a 1-0 game.
CeCee Austin then followed with a base hit and following a ground out by
Rachel Wright and stolen bases by Carr and Austin;
Rebecca Rousseau doubled them in extending the lead to 3-0.
The Blazers then picked up two more runs in the fourth inning as Rousseau led off the inning with a double. She would later score on an RBI base hit by
Lizzy Hess and then Jaques ripped a triple to plate Hess putting Belhaven up 5-0. Jackson State's only run of the afternoon was set up on an error by Wright that allowed Smith to reach base to open the inning. Jamerson tripled her in with two outs as the Tigers were able to avoid the shutout.
Sarah Burns pitched the first five innings for Belhaven and allowed only one unearned run while scattering three hits. Burns walked one and struck out nine more batters giving her 49 on the season. Burns is now 5-2 in 2011 after being credited with the victory. Rousseau also saw action in the circle as she pitched the final two innings surrendering just one hit while striking out two batters.
Carr had a big game at the plate going 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Rousseau had two hits and two runs batted in while Jaques collected two hits and one RBI. Hess chipped in with a hit and run batted in as well. Jaques, Hess, Carr, and Austin all had one stolen base each.
Jackson State (3-5) had four players with one hit each led by Jameson who was one for two with an RBI. Reed, Aikens, and Smith had the other hits for the Tigers. Jameson suffered the loss in the circle as she pitched all seven inning allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out one. Three of the five runs were unearned due to the error in the first inning.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday as they open up the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division schedule by hosting Faulkner University in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
