Montgomery, AL- The Belhaven women's basketball team earned their 22nd win of the season taking down Faulkner University Saturday afternoon 85-78.
Regena Jackson and
Portia Tucker came up big for the Blazers scoring 56 of Belhaven's 85 points.
Belhaven (22-6, 10-1 SSAC) was led by Jackson leading all scorers with 29 points and a team high five assists. Closely following Jackson was Tucker with 27 points and with a team high 12 rebounds. Jackson's and Tucker's point totals were both season highs in the 2010-11 season. Jackson is leading the team in scoring with an average of 17.6 points per game.
Kiara Johnson was able to chip in eight points on the night while the Blazers had three players with six points apiece including
Jessica Barlow, Erica Leflore, and Wendy Charles.
Belhaven shot 70% (20/27) from the free throw line and 43% (14/32) from the field. The Blazers forced the Eagles into fifteen turnovers and came up with four blocks on the night from Barlow, Carr, Leflore and Charles. The Blazers rounded in six steals on the night as Johnson led the way with three.
Faulkner (18-9, 4-6 SSAC) was led by Brittney Carter with 23 points and a team high 13 rebounds. Vittoria Poole turned in 17 points and Leticia Cuellar rounded out the double figure scoring for the Eagles with 15 points. Katie Pavlik and Chantrell Spencer turned in four assists apiece. The Eagles managed to out rebound the Blazers 40-38 with fifteen of them being offensive. The Eagles shot 40% from the field and 78% from the free throw line.
Belhaven opened up the game with two straight baskets one by
Jessica Barlow and another by
Portia Tucker with just sixty seconds gone by in the opening period.. Brittney Carter tied the game up at eight a piece with 15:51 on the clock but a pair of free throws by Jackson put the Blazers ahead again by two. Charles then hit a layup to make the score 30-23 with 6:37 left in the half. Vittoria Poole hit a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 35 with 2:06 left. The Eagles then went on a 7-0 run to take a seven point lead into the locker room 42-35.
The Blazers cut the lead to one in the second half with a field goal by Jackson making the score 44-43. Tucker made a field goal at the 13:56 mark to put the Blazers up three 50-47 and then Poole hit a three to tie the score up once again. Belhaven went on an 11- 5 run at the 9:44 mark to give themselves a six point lead. Jackson then connected on two free-throws with 2:10 left to go giving the Blazers their largest lead of the game at ten. Pavilk cut it to seven with 49 seconds left on the clock but at that point the game was out of reach for the Eagles as the Blazers went on to win 85-78.
Belhaven will now travel to Pensacola, FL on Tuesday to take on Pensacola Christian College in a non-conference contest. The tip-off is set for 5:30p.m. Belhaven defeated PCC back in December 85-39.
