Blazers Go 2-0 on Day One at St. Gregory’s Tournament

Farmers Branch, TX- The Belhaven softball team competed in the St. Gregory's Tournament on Friday afternoon taking two wins on day one. The Blazers defeated St. Gregory's University in the first contest 6-1 and in the second contest the Blazers beat the University of Houston-Victoria by the final score of 11-8. In the two games, the Blazers combined for 25 hits and 17 runs.

Belhaven's (5-2) Christina Jaques set the pace in the game against St. Gregory's University batting number one in the order collecting a single in her first at bat followed by two consecutive stolen bases. Rian O'Bannon stole a base after walking to first and CeeCee Austin picked up two RBIs plating Jaques and O'Bannon. Kayla Maldonado singled to third bringing in Austin for the score and the Blazers wrapped up the first inning 3-0.

The Blazers scored another run in the second inning from an Annalee Carr double giving the Blazers 4-0 lead. The next runs came in the fourth inning as the Blazers got an unearned run on an error by the third baseman. St. Gregory's finally got on the broad in their half of the fourth inning scoring their first run from a Cortney Reynaga double bringing in Autumn Brown to make the score 5-1. Belhaven managed to score the last run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning on a Katie Sanders double rounding in Rebecca Rousseau generating the final score of 6-1.

The Blazers had eight different players with at least one or two hits giving the Blazers fourteen hits in the contest and five RBIs. Sarah Burns pitched all seven innings for the Blazers giving up just one run and five hits. Burns received a win from the circle giving her two wins on the season. Blair Brooks led the way for St. Gregory's University with 2 hits while Autumn Brown carried one hit and the only run of the contest. Devon Frasier suffered the loss in the circle as she tossed all seven innings and was responsible for all five Blazer runs.

In the second game of the day, the Blazers took on # 19 ranked Houston-Victoria University. The contest stretched out all the way to eight innings. Houston-Victoria scored three runs early in the contest from an Allison Hinton homerun gaining three RBIs as Kocian and King also scored on the play. The Blazers did manage to score a run in the first when Christina Jaques hit a homerun making the score 3-1. Belhaven scored the next run of the game in the third inning off of Annalee Carr's homerun cutting the lead to 3-2.

The Blazers put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. O'Bannon hit a single to bring in Lizzy Hess for a score and then Rian O'Bannon and Christina Jacques scored from an Annalee Carr single giving the Blazers the 5-3 advantage. In the top of the seventh, Houston-Victoria scored two runs as Kristina Droz hit a two run homerun to bring in Araceli Galindo for a score tying the contest up at 5-5 to go into extra innings.

In the extra inning, the Jaguars put up three runs as Kellie King hit a double to bring in Kayla Lindeman for the first run of the frame. Courtney Pettit then homered to bring in pinch runner Kara Waukau giving the Jaguars an 8-5 advantage. The Blazers responded in the bottom of the eighth inning with six runs of their own. The first run was scored by Annalee Carr on an error by the third baseman. Lizzy Hess then singled sending in Rachel Wright for run number two. Christina Jaques then stepped up to the plate and blasted a grand slam homerun gaining 4 RBIs rounding in Hess, Sanders, and Maldonado.

Christina Jaques led the way for the Blazer turning in three hits and five RBIs. Rebbeca Rousseau pitched 7.0 innings for the Blazers allowing eight runs and 11 hits. Burns subbed in to pitch the extra inning and did not give up a run or a hit. Burns got the win in the circle running her season record to 3-2.

King had three hits and an RBI for Houston-Victory followed by Hinton with two hits and three runs batted in. Baylea Wagener took the loss for the Jaguars pitching 1.2 innings allowing six runs with all of them being unearned.

The Blazers will continue action on Saturday in the St. Gregory's Tournament as they take on 10th ranked Oklahoma City University at 10 a.m. and Oklahoma Christian University 12:30 PM.
