Jackson’s Triple Double Propels Blazers Past Mobile

Mobile, AL- Belhaven women's basketball team traveled to Mobile, AL on Thursday night to take on the University of Mobile where the Blazers came away with a 77-52 win over the Rams. The Blazers recorded their nineteenth win of the season and their seventh win of Southern States Athletic Conference play.

Belhaven (19-6, SSAC 7-1) was paced by Regena Jackson who recorded a triple double with 20 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds and a team high seven steals which nearly resulted in a quadruple double. Jackson is currently averaging 16.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game Kiara Johnson was the second leading scorer with 16 points and three steals. Closely following Johnson was Portia Tucker who dropped in 15 points and eight rebounds. Jessica Barlow turned in 11 points and nine rebounds while Sarah Carr chipped in with nine points going 3-5 from three point land.

The Blazers shot 45.8% (33/72) from the field and 58.3% from the free throw line (7/12). Belhaven outscored Mobile by six points in the first half 32-26 and were able to increase their scoring in the second half outgunning the Rams by nineteen points in the final period 45-26. The Blazers outrebounded the Rams 40-37 and the key stat in the game was the turnovers. Belhaven forced 22 Mobile miscues and took care of the ball on the offensive end of the floor with only 10 turnovers.

Mobile (12-9, SSAC 3-5) was led by Adrienne Mackay with 11 points and nine rebounds. Mackay was the Rams only player in double figures in the game. Anna Maddox turned in eight points and a team high five assists. Alice Honnery snatched a team high 12 rebounds while Tajkov and Melancon dropped in six points apiece. The Rams shot 36.8% (21/57) from the field and 41.7% (5/12) from the free throw.

The contest was very competitive in the first half as both teams looked good in their offensive sets. The Blazers were able to take a six point lead off a layup by Portia Tucker with ten minutes left in the first half. The Rams Alyssa Lane made a layup at 5:01 to cut it to four at 24-20. Kyndra Davis then hit a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 25-25 with just less than two minutes left in the opening half. Jackson then hit a pair of free throws to push the Blazer's lead back out to six at the buzzer making granting Belhaven a 32-26 edge.

The Blazers opened up the second half on an 11-2 run extending their lead to 15 making the score 43-28 to take control of the game. A layup by Anna Maddox cut the lead to 11 with 13:55 to go, but then the Blazers extended their lead to twenty off a field goal by Kiara Johnson. Adrienne Mackay made a bucket at 11:03 mark to cut the lead to sixteen until Jessica Barlow hit a layup to give the Blazers a twenty four point advantage. The Blazers enjoyed their largest lead of the night of 27 points thanks to a layup made by Portia Tucker with just under five minutes left in the game. The score put the Blazers on track for solidifying the win at 77-52.

Belhaven, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, is 19-6 overall and leads the SSAC West Division with a 7-1 league mark. Belhaven will look for their 20th win of the season on Saturday when they play host to William Carey University in Rugg Arena starting at 2:00 PM. A win would give the Blazers their first 20 win season since 1982 when the team went 28-14. Belhaven leads the Crusaders in the west division standings by two games after William Carey defeated Faulkner Thursday night 71-69.
