Blazers Explode Past Blue Mountain College Saturday Afternoon

Blue Mountain, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team traveled to Blue Mountain on Saturday and gained their second win of the 2011-12 season by the final score of 91-73. The Blazers managed to put up over 40 points in both halves posting 42 in the first and 49 in the second.

The first half of the contest was a battle as both teams traded baskets up until the 13:30 mark when Regena Jackson hit a three to put the Blazers up 15-12. Blue Mountain College briefly took the lead back at the 11:07 mark on a three pointer by Chelsea Hussey making it an 18-15 Topper lead. Erika Leflore made a field goal to put the Blazers back up by one with 10:40 left. A pair of made free throws allowed the Blazers to enjoy their biggest lead of the first half at seven points 27-20 with 8:40 showing on the clock. The Toppers Xenobia Lavender hit a field goal knotting the score at 32-32 with 3:38 left to play, but Keishara Rouser scored a basket with just two seconds left in the half giving the Blazers a five point advantage at the break 42-37.

The Blazers came out strong in the second half as Sarah Carr drained a three to give the Blazers a nine point advantage with 17:56 remaining on the clock. Carr then hit another three at the 16:34 mark to push the Blazers out in front 63-46. Carr's triples ignited the Blazers from that point on as Blue Mountain didn't get within 10 points the rest of the night. Portia Tucker hit a field goal to give the Blazers their largest lead in the contest at 70-46 with just over 14 minutes to play. Brittany Walls was able to cut the Blazer lead to 18 with a field goal with 5:41 remaining. With a minute remaining in the contest Portia Tucker hit a field goal pushing the Blazers lead to 17 as the scoreboard read 89-72. Christian Jaques capped the game with a pair of free throws as Belhaven took home the 91-73 win.

Belhaven (2-0) was paced by senior Portia Tucker with a game high 27 points as she went 10-13 from the field. Tucker was followed by Regena Jackson with 19 points and a team high seven assists. Sarah Carr rounded out the double digit leaders for the Blazers with 18 points hitting four threes in the contest. Kiara Johnson chipped in eight points with six rebounds.

The Blazers dialed in 51% of their field goals (34-66) while holding the Toppers to a field goal percentage of 32%. The Blazers knocked down half of their threes going 7-14 (50%) and forced Blue Mountain College into 23 turnovers which translated to 23 points off of turnovers.

Blue Mountain was led by Amber Johnson with 12 points. Following Johnson was Jessi Hayless with 10 points while Candace Davis chipped in nine points on the night. The Toppers managed a 66% free throw percentage, but a poor shooting night and solid defense by Belhaven contributed to the Topper loss.

The Blazers will be back in action on Friday November 11, 2011 in their first home contest of the season at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic against the Toppers in Rugg Arena. Game-time is slated for 6:00 PM.
