Belhaven Topples Brenau University

GAINESVILLE, Ga.- The Belhaven women's basketball team picked up its seventh straight win defeating Brenau University (GA) in Southern States Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 81-61. The win increases the Blazers season record to 7-0 and 2-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

Belhaven (7-0, 2-0 SSAC) handled the Tigers on Saturday as a high powered offense aided the Blazers in building a 17 point halftime lead. The Blazers shot 47 percent (15-32) from the field and 60 percent from three point land.  Belhaven was led on the offensive end by senior Regena Jackson with 24 points and five assists. Jackson has led the Blazers in scoring the last three games giving her a season average of 24 points per game. Junior Sarah Carr had a big game for the Blazers scoring a season high 23 points and five steals. Senior Portia Tucker dropped in 10 points on the night with a team high eight rebounds. Senior Kiara Johnson chipped in nine points while Jessica Barlow contributed eight points in the game. 

The Blazers forced 25 turnovers which led to 28 Blazer points. Belhaven also won the battle of the broads out-rebounding the Tigers 39-32. The Blazers as a team dished out 17 assists with Johnson leading the way with six.  

The Tigers were paced by Tatiana Khudiakova with 19 points. Following Khudiakova was Nikki Reed with 17 points and nine rebounds while Brittney Wiley turned in 13 points. Gabby Harvey had a team high 10 rebounds. Brenau shot 35% from the floor and 77% from the charity stripe.

The Blazers will be back in action on Tuesday November 22, 2011 as they travel to Troy, AL to take on NCAA Division I Troy University. The contest is an exhibition game and scheduled to start at 7:00 PM.
