PENSACOLA, Fla.-The Belhaven women's basketball team traveled to Pensacola Christian College Tuesday night and came away with a 56-38 win over the Eagles. The Blazers, ranked 25th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, got off to a slow start but picked up their game in the second half and pulled away for the win.
Belhaven (5-0) fell behind 6-4 five minutes into the first half following a layup by Pensacola Christian's Ashley Antuna. The Blazers then reeled off a 6-0 run to grab a 10-6 edge and never relinquished the lead the rest of the night.
Rachenia Powell gave Belhaven the lead at 8-6 and then
Jessica Barlow added a layup to cap the scoring spurt. Belhaven then grabbed their first double digit lead at 20-8 with 8:31 left in the first half. Ericka Leflore converted an old fashion three point play when she grabbed an offensive rebound, knocked in the layup, and drew the foul from Jenny Mitchell. The Blazers saw their advantage trimmed to seven points at the break and took a 28-21 lead to the locker room.
Belhaven came out in the second half and pushed the lead back out to double digits at 32-22 with 16:35 to play on a layup by
Sarah Carr. The Blazers largest advantage occurred with 56 seconds to go when
Mycal Smith made it a 56-36 contest. Jessica Highfield tossed in the final bucket of the night for the Eagles with 29 seconds left for the 56-38 final score.
Belhaven was led by Leflore who notched a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Six rebounds came on the offensive end of the floor. Leflore's double double was her second of the season and it boosted her scoring average to 10 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per contest.
Christina Jaques was the only other double digit scorer for Belhaven as the senior fired in 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Jessica Barlow had a team high four assists while Leflore, Powell, and Carr picked up three assists each. Powell also had a team high five steals.
The Blazers shot 34.8 percent from the field (23-66) and made 60 percent of their free throws (9-15). Belhaven outrebounded the Eagles 50-37 and had 23 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second chance points. The Blazer defense forced 29 turnovers and converted them into 28 points.
Pensacola Christian (0-7) was paced by Ashley Antuna with 15 points. Taneka Sandiford had seven rebounds, three assists, and seven steals on the night. The Eagles struggled from the field connecting on just 25.9 percent of their field goals (14-54) and only 8.3 percent of their triple tries (1-12).
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday night when the team opens up Southern States Athletic Conference action at Emmanuel College (GA) at 5:30 PM. The Blazers will then play at Brenau University (GA) in another SSAC tilt on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
