Jackson MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team got back on track after falling at Auburn Montgomery on Thursday night defeating the University of Mobile Saturday night in Rugg Arena 88-73. The Blazers came up big on the defensive end of the floor forcing 28 turnovers and getting nineteen steals on the night.
Belhaven (11-5, 1-1 SSAC) was led by
Regena Jackson who had a season high 22 points and five assists on the night. Closely following Jackson was
Sarah Carr with 20 points who went 5-8 from three point land while also turning in four assists.
Portia Tucker dropped in 15 points and seven rebounds while
Kiara Johnson chipped in 14 points and a team high eight steals. As a team the Blazers out rebounded the Rams 36-32 and managed three defensive blocks on the night.
The Blazers shot 50.8% on the night from the field and managed to outscore the Rams 44-24 in points in the paint. The Blazers capitalized off the Rams 28 turnovers scoring 34 points. Belhaven's bench came up big Saturday outscoring the Rams bench 30-11 with Johnson being the leading scorer off the bench with 14 points for the Blazers.
The University of Mobile (10-4, 1-1 SSAC) was led by Morgan Crawford with 18 points. Alice Honnery turned in 16 points and a team high 10 rebounds while Morgan Melancon contributed 15 points and four assists. The Rams forced the Blazers into 20 turnovers on the night but managed to score only 15 points off of Blazers mistakes. The Rams shot 48.1% from the field and 50% from three point range.
The University of Mobile opened up the game with a 12-2 run. At the 15:16 mark the Blazers were down nine points 17-8 after a three pointer by Morgan Crawford. The Blazers than cut the lead to three points on a layup by
Portia Tucker with 7:48 left in the first half. A pair of made free throws by
Regena Jackson tied the score up at 31 at the 3:31 mark of the opening frame. The Rams Morgan Melancon closed the half with a three pointer to give the Rams an eight point edge at 42-34 heading into the locker room.
The opening moments of the second half proved to be a back and forth battle until the 15:39 mark when
Sarah Carr was able to tie the game up at 47 with a layup which overcame a nine point deficit. The Blazers then took a three point lead 54-51 on a layup by
Kiara Johnson with 13 minutes left on the clock.
Regena Jackson then hit a layup to put the Blazers up six at 8:17 mark and that basket was a momentum changer for the Blazers who never looked back from that point on. Tucker put the Blazers up 16 with just under two minutes left on the clock and Belhaven then enjoyed their largest lead of the night at 17 off a jumper by Jackson with just under a minute left. The Jackson field goal would be the Blazers last of the game which cemented the 88-73 win. Belhaven dominated the final 20 minutes of the game outscoring the Rams 54-31.
The win brings the Blazers season record to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. Belhaven will now go on a three game road swing where they will take on William Carey University first Thursday night in Hattiesburg, MS. Belhaven will then head to New Orleans for matchups against Loyola University on Saturday and Dillard University on Monday. The tip-off for Thursday's game at William Carey is set for 5:30 PM.
