Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team finished off the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Spring Hill College at Freedom Ridge Park on Thursday afternoon. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, rallied for five runs in the sixth inning in game one to take a 6-4 win followed by a 2-1 victory in the night cap. Belhaven captured the GCAC regular season title on Tuesday at the University of Mobile and with Thursday's wins improved to 24-0 at home this season.
Game One
Belhaven (46-6, 13-3 GCAC) fell behind 3-0 through the first two innings of game one as Spring Hill (20-27, 5-11 GCAC) scored one run in the first and added two more in the second inning. Badger starting pitcher Samantha Brooks shutdown the Blazer bats until the bottom of the fourth when
Heather Pace singled home
Christina Jaques to cut the deficit to 3-1. Spring Hill rallied for a run in the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of Brooke Turlich and extended Spring Hill's lead back to three at 4-1.
In the sixth, Belhaven finally got to Brooks for five runs on six hits. H. Pace brought in the first run on a base hit to left that plated Jaques. With runners on second and third,
Rachel Wright delivered a two run single to right center that chased home
Rian O'Bannon and H. Pace to tie the game a 4-4. The score did not remain deadlocked for long as
Katie Sanders put the Blazers ahead with a run scoring single to left and
Britney Webb capped the inning on a ground rule RBI double just to the right of center that extended the Belhaven edge to 6-4. Belhaven starting pitcher
Sarah Burns then came out and closed the door on the Badgers in the top of the seventh to lock down the win.
Burns pitched all seven innings allowing four runs on seven with three walks and five strikeouts. Burns overall record now stands at 23-3 on the season with Thursday's victory. H. Pace and Wright led the Belhaven offense with 2 RBI's each while Sanders, Pace, Jaques, and Webb all had two hits apiece. Sanders and Webb were also credited with one run batted in.
Brooks took the loss in game one for Spring Hill allowing six runs on 10 hits with one strikeout. Lindsey Taylor, Monica Zeringue and Turlich had the only runs batted in for the Badgers.
Game Two
Belhaven pulled out in front early with a run in the second inning of game two. With runners on first and second and two outs, Spring Hill third baseman Brittany Abate made a costly fielding error on ball hit by Sanders that loaded the bases and gave Belhaven an extra out.
Lizzy Hess stepped to the plate and hit an infield single that brought in pinch runner
Kayla Maldonado for the game's first run.
Spring Hill tied the contest at 1-1 on a throwing error by pitcher
Rebecca Rousseau that allowed Zeringue to score from second base. However, Belhaven responded quickly with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on another clutch hit base hit down the left field line by Sanders. O'Bannon scored on the play after reaching on a walk and moving to second on a groundout by Wright. Rousseau then shutout the Badgers the rest of the way to preserve the 2-1 win.
Rousseau tossed all seven innings and gave up just one unearned run on four hits while walking two and striking out three. Rousseau improved her overall record to 12-3 in 2010. Jaques led the Blazers in hits going 2 for 3 at the dish while H. Pace, Sanders, Wright, and Hess all had one hit each. Sanders and Hess had the only runs batted in for Belhaven in game two. Jaques stole four bases on the day and Webb added to her steal total win one in the day's first game. Webb now has a record 72 on the season and Jaques reached 50 steals Thursday afternoon.
Brooks also started game two and went all six innings surrendering two runs on six hits with a walk and one strikeout for Spring Hill. Brooks is now 9-18 on the season in the circle. Zeringue had a pair of hits for the Badgers followed by Brooks and Taylor with one hit each.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Henderson, TN to meet up with Freed-Hardeman in a doubleheader starting at 5:00 PM. The Blazers will conclude the regular season on Saturday at Bethel University in McKenzie, TN.
