Mobile, AL-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, traveled to the 23rd ranked University of Mobile on Tuesday night and came away with a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader split with the Rams. The Blazers lost 9-4 in game one, but played solid defense in game two to get a 4-0 victory and clinch the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship. Belhaven is now 44-6 overall and 11-3 in the GCAC. Mobile now stands at 32-17 and are 11-5 in the league.
Britney Webb broke the NAIA single season stolen base record with three stolen bases in game one. Webb is 71 for 77 in stolen base attempts this season.
Game One
The Rams took control of game one in the bottom of the first by racking up eight runs with eight hits. Belhaven finally got on the board in the top of the fifth when
Jessica Eggold walked with the bases loaded to bring in pinch runner
Kayla Maldonado. The Blazer got another run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by
Katie Sanders. Mobile added one more run in the sixth inning and led 9-2 heading into the seventh.
The Blazers recorded their last two runs of the game in the seventh inning when Webb reached on a walk and stole second base. Eggold grounded out to short trailed by Webb who advanced to third on a throw. Christian Jaques hit an RBI single to shallow left scoring Webb and Jaques stole second base. Jaques advanced to third as
Tiffany Ansley flied out to right field and Jaques scored on a throwing error by the right fielder. Belhaven fought back, but it was not enough as Mobile came out on top 9-4.
Eggold led the Belhaven offense and went one for two at the plate with one RBI followed by Jaques and Sanders who both had one RBI as well. Desiree Truett had a huge game for Mobile going two for four at the plate with four runs batted in.
Salina Cervantes pitched one inning for the Blazers allowing five hits and four runs.
Rebecca Rousseau pitched five inning of game one and suffered her third loss of the season allowing six hits and five runs while striking out five to improve to 11-3. Leslie Pickette picked up the win for the Rams striking out one with only one run and five hits allowed.
Game Two
Game two went a lot better for Belhaven as they jumped on the board in the top of the first inning and never looked back on their way to the win. Eggold tripled to left field with one out and Jaques brought her in with a base hit to right field to make it 1-0 Belhaven.
In the third inning, Ansley hit a single to center field to plate Eggold extending the lead to 2-0. Belhaven's defense locked out Mobile throughout the entire game and the Blazers earned their last two runs of the game in the top of the fourth to give Belhaven a 4-0 victory. Sanders hit an RBI triple deep down the right field line scoring
Rachel Wright.
Kayla Maldonado came in to pinch run for Sanders and scored on a single to right center by Webb.
Sarah Burns pitched the entire game for the Blazers and did not give up any runs and allowed four hits with 11 strikeouts to get the win and improve to 22-3. Burns leads Belhaven with a total of 181 strikeouts in the 2010 season. Victoria Buie picked up the loss for Mobile giving up four runs and allowing five hits.
Offensively, the Blazers were led by Jaques who had a great game and went three for four at the plate with one RBI followed by Webb, Ansley, and Sanders who each had one RBI. Kirstyn Joiner, Tess Ackerman, Jessica Swanson, and Dorlicia Martin each had a hit for the Rams.
The Blazers will return to action on Thursday afternoon at home in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Spring Hill College at Freedom Ridge Park. The first pitch of game one is slated for 3:00 PM.
