Blazers Take One of Two on Day One of Gulf Coast Invitational

Orange Beach, AL-The Belhaven softball team completed day one of the 2010 Gulf Coast Invitational hosted by the University of Mobile on Friday winning one of two games. The Tournament features a total of 27 teams and includes a number of the nation's top players. The Blazers defeated #22 Auburn Montgomery 6-2 and fell short to Park University 3-2 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. After Friday's contests, Belhaven sits at 18-2 on the season.

Game One vs. Auburn Montgomery
Belhaven jumped ahead early in game one scoring two times in the top of the first inning on four hits. Britney Webb led the Blazers off with a single and stole second. Christina Jaques hit a double scoring Webb followed by Tiffany Ansley hitting a single. Jaques stole home to give Belhaven a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Senators earned their only two runs of the game on three hits. Belhaven put two more runs on the board as Kayla Maldonado and Katie Sanders crossed the plate in the top of the fourth on one hit and one error. The Blazers scored their fifth run of the game in the top of the sixth inning as Rachel Wright blasted her second homerun of the season to right center. The Blazers closed out the inning with two hits and one error. The Blazers then scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning as Wright hit a double allowing Rian O'Bannon to cross home plate as Belhaven went on to the 6-2 victory.

Wright had a strong performance in game one going 2 for 3 at the plate with a homerun and two runs batted in. Jaques added in two hits and one RBI followed by Jessica Eggold and Ansley with two hits apiece. Sarah Burns pitched the entire game with seven strikeouts and allowed only five hits. Burns was credited with her ninth win of the season and is now 9-1 in 2010. Brandi Richards pitched seven innings and was charged with six runs on 11 hits suffering the loss for Auburn-Montgomery.

Game Two vs. Park University
In game two, Belhaven answered fist by putting two runs on the scoreboard as Ansley and Wright both hit homeruns in the bottom of the second. These hits give Ansley a total of five homeruns and Wright a total of three homeruns on the 2010 season.

The Pirates scored their first run of the contest in the top of the fourth with three hits. In addition, Park University scored two more runs in the top of the fifth giving them a 3-2 lead. Solid defense throughout the rest of the game allowed the Pirates to edge the Blazers and lock up the win.

Rebecca Rousseau picked up her first loss in 2010 as she pitched five innings allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Salina Cervantes pitched the sixth and seventh surrendering only one hit while striking out one. Ansley and Wright were the offensive leaders for Blazers as they both has one run batted in. Ansley, Heather Pace, O'Bannon, Wright, Sanders, and Hess each had added in a hit for Belhaven.

The Blazers will return to action on Saturday to compete in the second day of the 2010 Gulf Coast Invitational at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Belhaven will square up against Thomas University at 9 AM, St. Gregory's University at 3 PM, and Trevecca Nazarene University at 7 PM.
