Blazers Stopped by Mobile

Box Score
Mobile, AL-It was a tough night for the Belhaven women's basketball team on Thursday, falling to the University of Mobile Rams 78-62. The Blazers now stand at 13-15 overall and 4-13 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. The Rams are now 16-11 overall and 8-9 in the league.

Belhaven never led in Thursday's game against the Rams. Mobile opened up the first half with a basket from Alyssa Lane, a free throw by Adrienne Mackay, an outside basket by Alice Honnery, and a three pointer by Davina Jefferson to give the Rams an 8-0 run. Off a nice pass by Courtney Ward, Jordin Mauk scored the first two points for the Blazers making the score 8-2 with 15:53 left in the first half. Jessica Barlow pulled Belhaven to within four points of the lead on a field goal with 14:46 on the clock. The Rams then increased the lead to 20 points at 28-8 with 7:44 in the opening half on a basket by Jefferson.

With 6:47 in the first half, Belhaven closed the gap to 17 points on a pair of free throws made by Mullins followed by Barlow answering on the first of two free throws. Sadly, it is the closet Belhaven would get for the rest of the first half. The Rams countered by rolling off 13 straight points to push their lead back to 30 and closed out the half with a 45-15 advantage.

The Blazers struggled to find their offense in the opening 20 minutes of play, hitting just 12.9 percent of their shots. Mobile in contrast executed on 60 percent of their attempts from the field to help put together the 30 point halftime lead.

From there, Mobile coasted to the 78-62 win. Belhaven's offensive hardship continued over the course of the second half. However, they improved a little going 16 of 51 from the field in the final period. The Blazers forced 35 Ram turnovers and had a 17-12 edge in steals. Nevertheless, it was not enough to overcome the lack of offense.

Sarah Carr had a good night for Belhaven leading the team in points with 14. Mullins had nine points, five rebounds, and two steals shots on the night. For the game, the Blazers shot 24.4 percent from the field and made 76.5 percent of their free throws.

Mobile had three players reach double figures in scoring led by Jefferson with 26 points followed by Kyion Boulton with 14 points and Lane had 10 points. Boulton also recorded a double double by snatching a game high 10 rebounds. The Rams made 56.4 percent of their shots and 77.8 of their free throws.

The Blazers return home on Saturday to face off against Tougaloo College in another GCAC conference contest. The tipoff is slated for 5:00 PM.
